I have recently purchased a blu-ray player and an extremely impressed by my screen's results (32" Orion 1080i). I have seen that HD movies on XBOX Live are 720p, how do they compare? Has anyone actually done a comparison? The variety of the movies seems to be not too bad, what with "Quantum of Solace" becoming recently available. I wonder if Live will ever be able to cope with 1080i or 1080p movies? I understand the movies to rent though are very expensive compared with other ways of hiring movies - am I right?

The majority of people (me included) probably can't tell the difference between 720 and 1080, especially at that size sreen. The 1080 generally begins to justify itself at over 50" screen size. As far as prices are concerned for downloading HD movies, I don't think that they are that bad.

I have only rented two movies from the Marketplace, and one of them was HD and while it looked good I could notice a fair amount of artifacts on the screen from compression and in general it did not look as good as a Blu Ray movie. Also here in Canada a movie like Quantum of Solace is 580 points, which is $9.27 and that is extortion, considering I can rent a Blu Ray for $6.

Just for reference I am using a 50" 1080p plasma, so it is possible 720p compressed material will be more noticeable than on a smaller set.

The difference between 720p and 1080p is miniscule on TV sets under 40". Once you get past 40" you can start seeing a difference between 720p and 1080p.
