I have a 32 in 720P LCD. I have my 360 running at 1080i being that my lcd also supports that. Picture quality looks GREAT while i'm gaming and such.

Now if I put in a dvd...it automatically drops everything down to the 480 resoltion which is standard. Is there anyway I can watch my Dvd's on my 720p resolution? I'm not expecting HD quality out of a standard DVD...but I would like for the resolutions to stay the same (1080i)no matter what I play on my 360. Is that possible?

I also had heard a rumor about how a 360 up converts ur regular dvd's to atleast 720p. Is this true??

Thank You guys for your time.

there are legal issues with upconverting over component. you need to run your 360 over VGA or HDMI to see your dvds upconverted to 1080i.

I'm not too sure about this, but I think you need a VGA connection to view DVDs in an upscaled format. I'm not sure why though. :(

Yep, all you need is the VGA cable to upconvert DVDs to whatever res you want. And with the VGA cable you can probably pick nearly the exact resolution of your LCD, as I'm sure the tv is 1366*768, so with vga you can pick 1360*768. Much better than upscaling everything to 1080i at 30fps and then making the tv deinterlace and downscale it back (why make the tv go through extra steps that can hurt quality). You should also stick with a progressive signal just because then you can get games running at a max of 60fps, not limited to 30 with interlaced.

So HDMI won't do it..only vga? I have an Elite but I have it hooked up with component cables. I tried using the HDMI..but the picture looked very bright and I think with component...the picture looks better on my LCD.

Now if I go out and buy the xbox vga cable and hook it up to my LCD, will I get audio out of a VGA...or will I need an audio Receiver. Keep in mind I have no surround sound...only audio out of my LCD.What else would I Need?

Thnx

No, it will upconvert on HDMI and VGA to 1080P, only component cables are limited to 480P.

However, if your tv is 720P native you will never get above that resolution since your TV is only capable of displaying the resolution. So it will downconvert any signal it gets to 720P for display.

No no no. HDMI and component are the only ways to upscale, so you are fine, no additional hardware required.

So what settings do I need to mess with? I'm using component right now and no upscale. It actually downscales it to 480i.

As for the HDMI....I I go hook up my HDMI cable...and leave my 360 settings at 1080i....put in a dvd..it will downscale it to 720p rather than the 480i component does?

Thx again.

Component doesn not upscale DVDs. Use VGA. HDMI should be able to do it also.

Not that it really matters. Upscaled DVDs rarely look better. If you got a good TV then there is no need to upscale the DVDs. The TV will scale it for you anyways.

Sorry, I didn't mention HDMI in my post since I thought that was a given. With a core or premium 360, then your only choice to upscale is VGA. With an Elite 360, you can upscale over HDMI or VGA.

Again, component will not upscale for legal reasons. Don't know why that other person said HDMI and Component only, as that is wrong.

To me, I wouldn't bother spending $40 on a VGA cable for DVD upscaling, wouldn't make that much of a difference. At that point, I'd go $140 more for a HD-DVD add-on that includes a movie in the box, a remote, and then 5 more movies by mail (HD-DVDs are allowed to play at 720p or 1080i over component). Now, if you have an Elite 360, well, that comes with an HDMI cable (right?) or you can get one for $6 from Monoprice, and it would be worth it for overall use.

Well the component cables should at least give you 480p, but maybe that was an oversight on your part or a typo.

The reason you are seeing the 720p with a DVD over HDMI is because that is the signal your TV is accepting. You should just select 720p from the dashboard and leave it at that. Or at least get 1080i out you head because your TV is not displaying that.

And I agree that upscaling doesn't really do a heck of a lot and specifically with the 360. There have been articles stating that it is a terrible upconverter.

I've use the 360 and more recently the PS3 as an upconverter and I think the PS3 does a marginally better job, but it won't sell you on anything. With the PS3 there is actually an option to turn off the upscaling while you are watching the movie so you can see the difference, and while there is one, I wouldn't cry at all if I lost it. Especially after seeing a Blu Ray or HD DVD movie. It's like modding your Sunfire.......after all is said and done you are still driving a Sunfire.

Yes I do have an Elite and it does come with a HDMI cable...but I still went out and bought me a Rocket Fish HDMI cable. (get em cheap)

I hooked up my HDMI to my elite and it did upscale my dvd's. The difference was barely visible...but even at that IMO I thought it looked alot better with component (the way I had it).I also noticed that once I put my components back in my 360 and put a dvd to play, it downscaled it to the 480p....andIMO it looked alot better than when it was on the HDMI 720p. I have no idea why...but the colors were alot vivid and darker w/ component. You could see alot more detail in the backgrounds. Go figure? I blamed my display...but in the end I stick to component until I upgrade my LCD in the future.

I thank you all for your help. :D

A reason for that could be that each input on your TV should have separate image settings. So when you plugged in the HDMI cable you saw the factory, nasty settings and instantly thought it was the cable. I'd try fooling around with the picture settings.
