bioshock was my pick, even though i felt like i was playing a metroid game the whole time (gameplay wise) but the story and graphics were great.
i was hoping mass effect wouldve gotten it though but im glad bioshock got it, hopefully more developers will see this as a sign and take more chances.
I'm going to be honest and blunt. Bioshock does not deserve GotY. Period. It's a good game. But it's not a GREAT game. Mass Effect, Call of Duty 4, hell, even Halo 3 are all far more deserving of the title than Bioshock. With all the companies that are giving Bioshock game of the year, I think it's becoming very apparent that GotY is an award that's bought, not earned, if you know what i mean. Let's hope Gamespot goes against the grain and regains it's honor lost with the Jeff firing.

It's a fair opinion to say that BioShock (to you) does not deserve GOTY. But buying their way there? Come one that's just nonsense. The game is incredibly atmospheric, the graphics are great, the framerate is smooth, the story is very involving and the voice acting is awesome. I would maybe call out the "bought the vote" angle if say Halo 3 was sweeping things, but BioShock deserves the praise it is receiving.
But in the end it's all irrelevant, we all play what we like and we all have our own GOTYs.

Problem is alot of places dont want to give it to Halo 3 so people still think they're serious but at the same time they also want to pick a good title so in reality is just one giant random stab in the dark.
For me the GOTY was Mass Effect by far.. but I can see how bioshock was chosen as it regardless of gameplay it is an artistic masterpeice plain out, no other word to describe the world they designed. GOTY? not in my opinion per say but It was a contender in my books.. deserveres it more than CoD4.
bioshock is my favorite game ever, so to say its the goty is an understatement...as far as "buying goty" that is just complete bs...i can't think of another game i have played that does everything as well as bioshock does...great gameplay that doesn't get old, great atmosphere( just the fact that it is underwater is amazing), great story, great graphics...there is simply nothing that is bad about the game. the only other game that even comes close to being considered for goty is call of duty 4...and that game isn't as original as bioshock is.
