    Best Cheap Gaming PC Build

    Last updated August 3, 2017

Shopping for PC components can be intimidating if you're not up to date on hardware news. Fortunately, we've done the research for you and have put together three tiered builds (cheap, mid-range, and high-end) geared to deliver great gaming experiences.

You can certainly build a PC for less than the budget-oriented rig we're recommending here, but it's often a good idea to spend a little more to mitigate serious bottlenecks and avoid harsh compromises. With that in mind, we spec'd out components that will deliver an excellent 1080p gaming experience for less $650.

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 1200$109.00
    GPU: EVGA GTX 1060 Gaming$220.00
    Motherboard: ASRock AB350M-HDV$70.00
    RAM: Patriot Viper Elite 8GB (2x4GB) 2800MHz$70.00
    Storage (SSD): Kingston A400 120GB$55.00
Storage (HDD): IBM/Seagate Constellation ES 1TB Hard Drive$40.00
    PSU: EVGA 500 B1 80+ Bronze 500W PSU$36.00
Case: Cooler Master MasterBox Lite 3.1$40.00
    Total$639.93

Listed prices reflect time of publish.

Click through the gallery to read why we chose our respective components.

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 1200

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 1200

AMD recently released two good budget CPUs with its Ryzen 3-series processors. Unlike Intel's entry-level Core-i3 equivalents, AMD's chips feature four cores instead of two. Four cores is the minimum number of cores we recommend for any respectable gaming PC.

That's why we're going with the Ryzen 3 1200 for our processor. It's an affordable quad-core CPU that offers a 3.1GHz base clock and a 3.4GHz boost clock. The CPU is also fully unlocked, which means you can overclock it as long as you have an AM4 motherboard with the B350 or X370 chipset and proper cooling. The same can't be said of all Intel i3 CPUs.

Its quad-core architecture makes it VR-ready and provides some future-proofing for games that will be optimized for four cores. It also has four threads; coupled with 8MB of L3 cache and 2MB of L2 cache, this makes it a pretty good chip for productivity, too. And you don't need to worry about spending more on an aftermarket cooler since the CPU comes with AMD's Wraith Stealth solution.

    Price: $109

    GPU: EVGA GTX 1060 Gaming

    GPU: EVGA GTX 1060 Gaming

The Cryptocurrency craze has unfortunately greatly inflated the price of graphics cards since GPUs are so good at mining data, but we were able to find an EVGA GTX 1060 for $220. It's a really good GPU, too. From our testing, it's on par with the GeForce GTX 980, which was Nvidia's $550 flagship graphics card in 2014.

In terms of specs, the EVGA variant carries a stock 1506MHz core clock and 1708MHz boost clock along with 3GB of GDDR5 RAM. It's by far the most expensive component in our build and you can argue that it belongs more in a mid-range build, but we think it's worth the investment for a gaming rig considering it should be able to max out most games at 1080p with smooth, playable frame rates.

    Price: $220

    Motherboard: ASRock AB350M-HDV

    Motherboard: ASRock AB350M-HDV

Since we selected a Ryzen 3 CPU, we'll need an AM4 motherboard to pair it with. We're going with ASRock's AB350M-HDV ATX mobo. At $70, it's the most affordable board we could find that will allow us to overclock our CPU. It also supports DDR4 RAM up to 3200MHz. Finally, it has an M.2 slot, which gives you the option to install super-fast NVMe SSDs.

    Price: $70

    RAM: Patriot Viper Elite 8GB (2 x 4GB) 2800MHz

    RAM: Patriot Viper Elite 8GB (2 x 4GB) 2800MHz

Any respectable gaming PC should have at least 8GB of RAM, so we're going with 8GB of Patriot's Viper Elite sticks clocked at 2800MHz. Patriot is known for its memory, and these modules in particular are compatible with our Ryzen CPU. We're getting our RAM across two modules, so we can run it in dual-channel mode to get more memory bandwidth.

    Price: $70

    Storage (SSD): Kingston A400 120GB

    Storage (SSD): Kingston A400 120GB

While solid-state drives are more expensive than hard drives, we couldn't recommend building a system without one, even in a budget-centric rig. As an affordable solution, we're going with Kingston's 120GB A400 SSD. That's not a ton of storage, but it should be enough for the operating system and some of your favorite games and programs. In terms of speeds, it's a SATA III drive that's capable of delivering read and write speeds up to 500MB/s and 450MB/s, respectively. In layman's terms, this will make your PC boot up faster, load programs quicker, and feel much more responsive overall.

    Price: $55

Storage (HDD): IBM/Seagate Constellation ES 1TB Hard Drive

Storage (HDD): IBM/Seagate Constellation ES 1TB Hard Drive

While we absolutely recommend getting a solid-state drive for at least your boot drive, 120GB isn't going to be enough for all your needs. That's why we're supplementing our SSD with a 1TB hard drive. More specifically, we're recommending the IBM/Seagate Constellation ES drive, which is a 7,200RPM HDD that provides plenty of space for the price.

    Price: $40

    PSU: EVGA 500 B1, 80+ Bronze 500W PSU

    PSU: EVGA 500 B1, 80+ Bronze 500W PSU

Even though we're putting together a budget rig, it's vital that you don't skimp out and buy a cheap, no-name power supply. A PSU that fails can really damage the rest of your components. With that said, we're going with EVGA's 500 B1 PSU. The company is one of the best PSU manufacturers on the market, and its 80 Plus Bronze rating provides safety at an affordable price. Its 500-watt output also offers more than enough juice to power all of our components.

    Price: $36

Case: Cooler Master MasterBox Lite 3.1

Case: Cooler Master MasterBox Lite 3.1

Just because our case is under 40 bucks, it doesn't mean that we have to get one that looks ugly or cuts corners on features. Cooler Master's MasterBox Lite 3.1 is built with acrylic glass front and side panels and supports two 120mm fans at the front, a 120mm fan in the back, and has a cutout at the bottom for your PSU fan. The case fits full-length graphics cards and offers front I/O that includes a headphone jack, mic port, USB 3.0 port, and USB 2.0 port. Overall, the case looks pretty sleek as well.

    Price: $40

    Total

    Total

The total for our build comes up to $751.92 You can certainly build a PC for less, but this build represents a killer gaming rig that will be able to max out the most graphically demanding games at 1080p with smooth frame rates. It’ll also be able to handle VR and plenty of 1440p games as well. It has all the core components you need in a great gaming PC.

My recommendation - if you're spending $700 for such an entry level PC (you have to add at least another $100 or so for keyboard, mouse, speakers) just buy a console and save another $300-$400.

This PC will be useless in ~6months to a year. What's the point? A console will last at least another 4 years or so.

The other option is put another $750-$800 more and get a beefier gaming PC for ~$1600 or so.

Actually, for its price, a console is just unbelievably fantastic value.

@fanirama: ok this is bullshit.. buy a ps4 at launch 299, upgrade to a ps4 pro 399, add in ps plus 60 a year for 4 years = 240 bucks.. add in full priced games.. add in a 4k hdr tv 500-900+ bucks, add in a second controller 60 bucks. So the total is 1000+ usd so far without any games and without a 4k hdr tv. That right there is over the cost of most high end pc gaming rigs bro. think again before you spew out bullshit.

@masscrack: Ok, now you're spewing total bullshit here.

Lets go with your model - buy a decent PC for $1200-$1400, upgrade video card for $400, buy a good 4k monitor for $600, buy a gaming keyboard/mouse for $100, add in full priced games for $60 or await sales 6-9 months after games are released or await PC port like 1.5-2 years after console release.

So far total is over $2500 without any games.

    Feel stupid now?

Think again before you spew your bullshit?

@fanirama: Again you have diarrhea of the mouth. all those things you mention are OPTIONAL!.. a good 1080p IPS monitor cost 99 bucks. a 480 you can get for 160 bucks after MIR, you won't need to upgrade for a whole console generation. You can get a mouse/keyboard for 15 bucks. you never pay full priced games for PC or your doing it wrong and I'm not talking about pirating. You are inflating prices for your own personal agenda. Triggered fvck.

@masscrack: Your stupidity knows no bounds - you wrote this - "buy a ps4 at launch 299, upgrade to a ps4 pro 399..."

I mean - seriously? It's the same thing as saying - buy a video card for $400 at launch and upgrade to newer video card next year for another $400

Way to inflate PS4 price by $400 for no real reason. You want a 1080p monitor for PC for $99 but mentioned 4K HDR TV for $500-$900 for console. You do know that the $99 monitor will work for console too? And lol at 1080p monitor for PC.

You mention mail in rebates as if it is a fact for every component while ignoring console deals for PS4 or XB1 going on right now.. Mouse/keyboard for $15 - lol

And you call yourself a PC gamer. What a joke you are. It is YOU who inflated prices for no reason.

You're a pathetic fanboy with no brains. GTFO.

And it is "you're", not "your" in "your doing it wrong". Maybe you need to go to school and learn proper English.

@fanirama: lets do it your way and let me school you again.. those prices are current retail prices, even at the cheapest 250 bucks after taxes it would still come out to 300+ dollars. There are no deals on ps4 pro. Usually the only reason you would by a ps4 pro is to take advantage of what the system has to offer, and that is 4k/HDR. You usually aren't going to use a small 24 inch 1080p monitor when playing from your couch. Who is going to get a ps4 and not use ps plus or internet? it cost 10 bucks a month in you do not buy a one year card for 59.99, and that is the retail price. I mentioned the 4k tv but I also did not include that in the final estimate as it is optional.

You over inflated actual prices, like right now the pc listed here you can get for 699 bucks with taxes included. You put the price at 1400 bucks for some reason, when the 480 is a highend video card that can play most all game at 1080p 60+fps ultra, the processor is also highend and all you need, you wouldn't even get a 5 fps difference if you upgraded to an i7. Then you put a 4k monitor at 600 bucks, the 480 is not a 4k gaming card lets get that straight, and 98% of pc gamers still use 1080p.

So lets do it like this, you buy a regular ps4 slim for 300 bucks taxes included + the 240 for 4 years of ps plus.. that is 540 bucks with no games, no extra controller, no monitor, 500gb hard drive. For that 540 bucks it won't even get you 1080p @ a solid 30 fps. This computer listed here will get you 1080p plus 60fps at higher fidelity. Plus you have a 1 tb harddrive, an SSD, way faster gpu, way faster cpu.. and you can actually do stuff like video editing, software design, custom mods, and much more.

I like how you mention grammar on an internet forum. That must mean you have no other ground to stand on, so you try to pick out things that don't relate to the topic so you feel better about yourself but it was just an error, I know the difference between you're and your. It is a common mistake that happens when you really don't give a shit to proofread something on an internet forum. Is that all that you got? You also do not start out a sentence with the word "And", as it is a conjunction. So go learn proper English yourself, kid. Not the way you use it anyways. Your English sounds like a fucking 12 year old wrote it. What are you using all those hyphens for dumb ass, do you not know how to use commas? I mean - seriously?

@masscrack: You just keep talking gibberish.

You lost the first argument and completely avoided mentioning it - where you included things like buy a ps4 and then upgrade to ps4 pro etc.

The entry level PC here is $726 and doesn't include cost of Windows license ($100), good mouse/keyboard ($60 at min.), speakers ($40+). That puts it at $926 at least. Add in your 1080p monitor and it is $1026 now.

And it is really entry level and will become rubbish in 1-1.5 years for modern games at meaningful res. This PC will play the games either same or inferior to current consoles. Consoles ARE PCs - just highly optimized for gaming. You're not looking for heavy duty video editing on it. However, some games like GTA V do let you do it. Consoles also let you watch movies, youtube and have browsers too so technically for most people a console might do it for them. Same reason why iPads are so prevalent - easier than full blown desktop for most people.

Sure, if you want to keep reducing graphical settings, by all means. Just stop your bitching.

By contrast, consoles still give great gaming 6 years into their life.

I game on PCs, gaming laptops, handhelds and consoles and consoles are fantastic value for money.

@fanirama: Lost first argument? I included it because that is what everyone is doing! They are upgrading their old ps4's to ps4 pros so they can keep up with 4 year old computers!

You don't need to buy a computer with windows, linux is free, also windows 10 insider is free, and you can use windows 10 free, you will just have a watermark. Good mouse/keyboard combos are 20 bucks max on newegg, usually people have plenty of these lying around already. Speakers usually come with the monitor. You add in my 99 buck monitor and I will also add in your tv that cost at least 300 dollars, and that is one shitty tv. So the price is at 900 dollars and that is not even the ps4 pro! or headset, or second controller. For 699 you get a computer that shits on the ps4 pro, if you wanna go even cheaper you can.. ps4 pro still plays games at 30 fps!! rofl.

This pc is far from entry level, thats what makes me think you don't know much about computers.. this is a mid level computer, an i5 and 480 is not entry level. A 460 or 1050 is an entry level graphics card for about 99 bucks or less. A amd fx or i3 is entry level for 99 bucks or less.

Again this is the last I will talk to you about it because i've proven my point, you're just repeating yourself and I know you're one of those people that like to have the last word, so enjoy talking to air bro. Stop spreading bullshit and you won't get put in your place again.

@masscrack: "So the price is at 900 dollars and that is not even the ps4 pro! or headset, or second controller"

So much stupid in your response. You have no clue what you keep saying like a moron. A PS4 Pro is $400. You even wrote it. Even with your ridiculous math and fuzzy logic to make cheap PCs appear even cheaper just because you can't beat the price of a console, you resort to lies like Trump.

    A PS4 Pro + PS VR bundle + extra controller =~ $950.

Enjoy your basic entry level "gaming" PC with linux with Indie games (I'm a heavy linux user and my work involves linux and I can tell you Linux isn't as good for gaming as Windows is and cannot play several AAA games) while on consoles you can game in VR and still save money.

You're just a pathetic PC fanboy who doesn't even understand key concepts but keeps talking despite losing arguments convincingly.

@fanirama: Well yeah, that's what I thought. Problem is, that my parents didn't want me to spend money on something that isn't gonna help me, so they just said to me: ''You can play free games, there's no diffrence after all'' and I couldn't say them, that there is a big of a difrence. So all I had left was to pirate. Now I buy games tho, that time is gone. It's diffrent when you buy one, it just..I can't find the words. :D

@fanirama: If it's powerful enough to run games at console quality now, then it will be powerful enough to run them pretty much until next gen. It's not like the parts get less powerful.

    @fanirama:

This console is perfectly fine to game at 1080p 60 fps for the next 3-4 years or more.

You can get a mouse and keyboard for $15, no one said you have to go all out.

Your point is blinded, for the price a PS4 gives you very little value considering most games are remasters, there's some games that are good but most have been a let down.

@G4mBi7: and so is your point, most games are remaststers? What planet have you been living on?

The number of remastered certainly doesn't amount to.....most... at all.

And your closing remark about some games are good and some have been a let down, that goes for all platforms, come on.

Just buy a console. Cheap PC's are a waste of money especially when you still need to get a monitor.

Build a budget PC that preforms the same as the consoles. caveat, in a couple a years time it won't even come close. You are better off saving your hard earned cash for a while and buying higher end hardware, it will last longer.

Just one question: Does it max out Witcher 3 at 1080/60?

@elkoldo: My i920 CPU, 6GB of DDR3 Ram and GTX 960 does ultra at 1080p/45fps. I'd say the above pc does fine.

@sellingthings: it works but the GPU have a huge loss of its performance, like AMD trying to run Physx, as you can see below

Plus tax, monitor, speakers, mouse, and keyboard. And unless you're skimping on those, you're looking at a grand.

@IMAHAPYHIPPO: what magical world do you live in where consoles work on thin air? Also what taxes? Any country specific taxes for tech would apply on consoles too. And who the hek uses speakers these days, everyone already has headphones they can use on anything.

    HDTV, HDTV, Logitech Touch Keyboard.

Consoles aren't tax free, don't come with free TVs and speakers.

    @Vatusus:

I have 4 PCs running that I built, 3 are connected to HDTVs. One is connected to a 32" HDTV being used on a desk.

My point is a PC monitor is NOT NEEDED, therefore should not be included in the price. Particularly since monitor prices will vary wildly based on size, resolution, response time...etc.

Go cheap on everything (within reason, as in don't buy a shitty PSU or a shitty case) except gpu. I think it's best to get the minimum in all aspects without bottlenecking a good gpu e.g a gtx 1070.

@sellingthings: I guess you're right. I just had a bad experience once when I got a 30 euro case and the front usb slots had issues, and the whole case was electric to the touch, overall pretty fucked up, but it lasted 4 years anyways!

@parkurtommo: High-end processor all the way. A good processor will last you through three cycles of video cards. If I was on a budget, that's the first thing I'd put money into.

@IMAHAPYHIPPO: Lol what? Considering the amount of CPU intense games which is a pretty small number, investing most of your money in "High-end processor" is one of the stupidest thing you can do. GPU all the way, unless you wanna play those sweet games at low.

@gothsalvation: pretty much every online mp game is CPU bound. So yea, CPU is important, not to mention bottlenecks.
