    Every GameSpot 10/10 Review Score

By GameSpot Staff on March 4, 2025 at 8:11AM PST

    The gaming essentials.

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

    The gaming essentials.

It isn't often that we give 10/10 review scores on GameSpot. Since the site was founded in 1996, only 28 games have earned that rank. But to achieve a 10/10, a game needs to be essential, and it needs to have something so meaningful to offer us that it simply cannot be ignored. Regardless, a 10/10 review score is always determined by the personal opinion of its respective writer and always reflects as such. So without further ado, here is a list of all the games that we've scored with a 10/10! For more details on the review process and what a 10/10 means at GameSpot, check out our in-depth Q&A below.

What makes a game a 10, and has that definition changed over the years? Does a 10 mean it's "perfect"?

A 10 does not mean a game is perfect, but it does mean that it's a game we believe everyone should play. In our opinion, no game can be considered perfect. That means you may see a game getting a 10 despite having issues. It also means that games without obvious flaws may be scored below 10.

On the rare occasion when we publish a 10 review, that is our way of saying that no matter your preference for genre, developer, setting, or console, you owe it to yourself to find a way to play the game in question.

A review is obviously just one person's opinion, so how do you deal with conflicting thoughts on a game, both for high and low scores? What if someone else on GameSpot thinks a game deserves a much higher (or lower) score?

It's true that every review is an individual's take on a game, and sure enough, the many individuals within GameSpot often have differing opinions on the same game. This is something we accept, and we welcome diversity of opinion at the end of the day.

GameSpot's editorial team peer-reviews each other's work during the review process. This is not to determine whether we all agree on a score, but it allows us to ensure that the text we publish backs up the score that's issued. That means that there are reviews published where we may not all agree with the editor's opinion, but are otherwise confident enough in their argumentation to put our stamp on the review.

When the time comes that a score fails to align with the text as submitted, we will work together with the author to determine if they were able to effectively convey their thoughts relative to the score, and vice versa. We always encourage our writers to put their words down first and determine the score after the fact.

"Split Fiction could very well be the best cooperative game I've ever played. At the very least, I firmly believe it sets a new standard for the genre. And yet, it's more than that. Split Fiction is a love letter to creativity--to stories, games, and the people who make them. It is funny, dark, joyous, childish, tender, cheesy, thrilling, and remarkable." Read the full review.

    Metaphor: ReFantazio

    Metaphor: ReFantazio

"Somehow, Metaphor: ReFantazio is even greater than the sum of its parts, yet each piece of the game is masterfully crafted. I found the whole experience transcendent and was impressed by how it felt both novel yet familiar--elevated and modern, yet so reminiscent to the fantasy RPGs I sunk countless hours into on my little grey PlayStation. But most importantly, it made me remember that we are lost without hope. It sounds silly and cliche, I know--sometimes it can be. It also certainly doesn't put out the fires set all over the world. But it reminded me that giving into despair and fear serves no one, myself included. It reminded me that fantasy and fiction have power--words and stories have power. They can inspire and comfort, and these things that are vital to preserving. And it reminded me that the proof of good in the world can be us, and that's a good start." Read the full review.

"Alan Wake 2 is one of the most ambitious games I've ever played, but don't misconstrue that, as it doesn't fall short of its lofty goals. On the contrary, Alan Wake 2 achieves virtually everything developer Remedy Entertainment set out to do. It's a game that feels novel and risky that is executed with confidence and a clarity of vision. The end result is a one-of-a-kind sequel that redefines its series, blazes trails in video game storytelling, and stands as the monument to a studio that has unlocked its potential to the fullest." "Near the end of Baldur's Gate 3, a character says, "Too much freedom can be frightening." It's a powerful line within the context of the story, but it also speaks to Baldur's Gate 3 on a deeper level. The freedom that it offers is unprecedented, and it takes a little while to really see the scope of what that means for the game. At times, the sheer number of choices and consequences can be overwhelming. But before long, it becomes apparent that Baldur's Gate 3 allows players to be the authors of their own destinies in a way no other game has before." Read the full review.

It's a fantastic mix of nearly everything you could ask of Cyberpunk. And after taking 30 hours to experience all of its content--both main story routes, the new ending, all the side missions and gigs, and more--I can't imagine Cyberpunk 2077 without Phantom Liberty." "The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is so much more than a sequel to Breath of the Wild. While this newest entry in the Zelda franchise is most recognizably similar to that 2017 game, it builds upon the foundation so thoroughly and transformationally that it feels like a revelation. This is The Legend of Zelda at its finest, borrowing the best pieces and qualities from across the franchise's history and creating something new that is emotionally resonant, captivating, and endlessly rewarding." Elden Ring takes the shards of what came before and forges them into something that will go down in history as one of the all-time greats: a triumph in design and creativity, and an open-world game that distinguishes itself for what it doesn't do as much as what it does." "Perhaps the most laudable part of Deathloop is how it takes so many seemingly disparate things and creates harmony between them. Gameplay systems that feel isolated become pieces of a bigger puzzle, and when you see how they seamlessly connect together, you realize how special an achievement it really is. Similarly, on paper, the different aesthetics should be like oil and water, but they come together effortlessly to be part of a greater whole, and, for me, that's what Deathloop is really about. By standing back and looking at the bigger picture, the uncharacteristic choices and unexpected behaviors feel necessary--essential even." Read the full review.

Learning the various operators and how to breach or protect a room with them can be a slow crawl, but Siege makes it easy to understand what your mistakes are, thanks in part to seeing both sides of every match. "For anyone who appreciates games that rise above the simple act of pushing a few buttons and pulling a few triggers, Metal Gear Solid 4 is a stimulating ride that you won't soon forget. You'll want to see what happens next, yet when its long campaign draws to a close, you'll wish it would continue. That's not just because it's a well-told tale, but because that tale is woven through a thoroughly impressive game that tops its predecessors." Read the full review.

"In case you haven't guessed already, Grand Theft Auto IV is a game that you simply have to play. The single-player game, which you can still play long after you complete the story, is the series' best by far, and the multiplayer features are good enough that you'll likely have no problem finding people to play with for many months to come. The minor flaws that you'll experience are no more difficult to overlook than those in previous GTA games, and they're greatly outnumbered by the features that will impress and surprise you anytime you think you've already seen everything that the game has to offer. How many times have you wheeled out this list over the last 2-3 years now ? The fact that you gave a game a 10 is no longer an uncommon event, You're only coming off as pretentious (or at worst greedy), so just stop it. Please, for the love of god, stop.

@Blackened_Halo: If you were playing Tony Hawk games in 2001, it was a damn masterpiece of the genre. I was 11 when that game came out and no Tony Hawk or Skate game has ever come close to nailing the near perfection of that game. Even the soundtrack was perfect and it had online play. ONLINE ON PS2 IN 2001!!! That was nearly unheard of.

@rhenom: Last of Us is definitelty a 8. Good game but linear, shallow and with little to no replay value and the daddy-daughter bonding the game revolves around may not resonate with everyone.

@netiger: Well you are entitled to your opinion just like everyone else, but consider this: yes it's linear, but whether that's a bad thing is completely subjective. Not every game needs to be open world like Skyrim. One could argue that having a linear story keeps things focused and moving along. As for being shallow, what exactly do you want? Tabletop RPG mechanics? Replay value is yet another subjective idea, some people no doubt have replayed TLOU and had a grand time, sure the experience isn't going to change wildly from one play through to the next, but, as with the linear thing, if they tried to appease people wanting every scenario the quality of the game could suffer. And finishing off with your subjectivity litmus test, I liked the story quite a bit and I think that a lot of people feel similarly. You can't please everyone.

As for what's not subjective, TLOU is made by the same developer as the Uncharted series and every complaint you raised could be said about the Uncharted games. Uncharted 2 got a 9.5, 3 got a 9 and Uncharted 4 got a 10. It could be argued that TLOU is better than any of those.

@rhenom: As for shallow for instance I expect real crafting mechanics like Alien Isolation. In TLOU you get 6 materials to craft 6 items so why not just give the items instead?

I expect choices, multiple paths that actually change the way the game unfolds. I expect more foes variety, I expected a lot more actually. Being linear is not a quality, but something which can be overlooked. If you take a look at those games considered the best around you'll realize almost none of them are linear, naughty dog seems to be the only to get a free pass. As far as adventure games go, Tomb Raider gets everything right and would be the game I measure naughty dog games against.

I'm not arguing that TLOU is better than uncharted. I don't like Uncharted, specially the PS3 ones. I think TLOU is a very good game despite what I pointed and I think everyone who has a PS3 or PS4 should give it a try.

@rhenom: I pointed out why exactly TLOU is linear and shallow and this is the best you can come up with? What a waste of time.

On this list Uncharted 4 and Journey and that's it, and Journey shouldn't even be considered a game, being a desert walking simulator. Every other game on that list has great depth.

@netiger: Ok I'm actually done with this conversation. You call Journey a walking simulator, well this might be shocking, but in a story driven action game like TLOU not everyone wants a crafting simulator. They could add 100 crafting items to the game and it wouldn't make the story any better. And not every fucking game needs to be open world like Skyrim. Open world is one way to do a game, not the only way, you should know all about linear games with your linear mindset of what games should be.

And for the record, MGS4 and Bayonetta are linear, not to mention the likes of Tony Hawk and Soul Caliber.

But seriously I'm done here. Bye.

    @rhenom: Yeah I like Skyrim.

Let me tell you a fact since you couldn't come up with one.

My "personal preference" (Skyrim) outsold your personal preference (The Last of Us) 3, 4, 5-fold.

And it didn't ever have the privilege of being released amongst a draught of games, like TLOU remastered was on PS4, to help boost its sales.

So it does resonate with a lot more people than yours, and it's not like Skyrim is aiming to please everyone and being accessible like TLOU is.

So Skyrim is way more deserving of a higher than 8 than TLOU and even so I'm not saying it should be, and I don't get mad over criticism to the game like you do when I refer to TLOU which you weren't able to defend at all.

Oh and by saying MGS4, Soul Calibur and Bayonetta are linear you make it clear you never played them, but I didn't expect you to.

    Thanks.

@netiger: Skyrim was on PS3, PS4,PC, xbox 360, Xbox one and Switch.

The Last of Us was ONLY on PS3 and PS4.

Now, tell me, genius, why do you think Skyrim sold so much more?!?

Those are indeed facts that I just posted.

Now, it's your turn to make up an excuse. GO!

@livedreamplay: Opinions, by definition, vary. If everyone was part of the same hive-mind, you wouldn't need reviews, because we'd all think the same way and buy the same products. We're dangerously close to that already. Just because someone has a different opinion than you doesn't make that opinion dishonest, for ****'s sake.

@FranklynStreet: The matter is a little more complex than that, because opinions are usually justified with arguments, and those arguments can be both subjective or objective. So while I agree you can't tell anyone that his opinion is not so, because it is an opinion, I believe you can definitely say that his opinion was wrongly founded, or dishonest, or manipulated, and so on...

@livedreamplay: And I don't believe you can "definitely" say anything like that... that his opinion is wrongly founded, dishonest, or manipulated. You're grasping at straws, and making unsubstantiated, ludicrous statements just because his opinions don't agree with your own. It's ok that he has a different opinion. Just let it go and move on, and let it be what it is... a difference of opinion.

@FranklynStreet: Not really though. If I make an article saying that Forza 7 is actually a shooter-rpg instead of a racing game, people can fairly say that I'm wrong, even if it's my opinion, because I can't back my opinion up with actual arguments. You can call this "a difference of opinion", but what it actually is is me lying about Forza 7 being a shooter-rpg...

Not a list to be proud of.

This just shows how one (GameSpot and indeed most people) can form an opinion (review and rating) on the release of a game, but in retrospect years later can be shown to have been completely wrong and managed to exclude so many good games that often take time to grow on you. You have just proved GameSpot that your precious scoring system is severely flawed. A better list would be, now that we know better and have seen the impact certain games have had over a period of years, these are the best games that have ever been released. Therefore, as always, take a game reviewers score with a gain of salt. Everyone has biases, and GameSpot is no different. Check other sites and game-play footage, and talk to your friends before you form your own opinion. Never depend on any one single score. No site (or person) gets it right all the time. as GameSpot has now proved. Besides, we all have different tastes and preferences in a game. What I love to play or am willing to put up with, may not be what you want to play. Be wise and informed.

@Riprock: I agree that you can't rely on one site or review. But GS 10s are a solid lot. You ever looked back at Oscar picks? GameSpot's record is much better than that.

@megagood2345: You're right. The same problem exists with movie and TV awards, music awards, and Rotten Tomatoes, to name a few. But it truly becomes a problem when we stop using our own discernment and blindly rely on someone else's score or opinion. I know of people who will not go to a movie unless it has a RT score of 60% or better. But yours or my particular interests could very well be different than the reviewer's. Let's not turn our brains off. And yes, also make use of what opinions others provide, but make our own informed choice/decision. My most important comments were at the end of my post -"take a game reviewers score with a gain of salt" and "Never depend on any one single score" and "Be wise and informed". NO rating system is perfect, so my statement that GameSpot's rating system is broken should be no surprise. Has their rating system been helpful to many gamers anyhow? Of course, and all the more when you read the review and find what you identify with and don't.

Finally, there is no such thing as an essential or "must have" game. It is all subjective. Just as there is no such thing as a must own movie or music CD. People around the world live full and productive lives without these things. Clean water, food, shelter, good relationships (love) and health are "essential" - not a game, movie, or particular piece of music. These other things can however provide beauty, art, and fun to our lives, but again it's all subjective. Thus we must acknowledge that the games GameSpot gave a 10/10 is also subjective. Some will identify and agree and others will not. I am one of those who disagree and see their flaws. I could say that Bach and Mozart composed exceptional music, but you may not like classical music at all. No score applies the same for EVERYONE. Nonetheless, you have every right to your opinion.

@Riprock: Chrono Cross and Ocarina of Time are still 10s. I just beat Chrono Cross again last year on my Vita.

@Riprock: However, all of Gamespots 10s are very good games to play.
