Argentina's Angel Cabrera held off Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk to become the second South American to win a major title with a one-shot victory at the U.S. Open on Sunday.

Twice champion Woods, hunting his 13th major title, had to settle for a share of second place with fellow American Furyk (70) after closing with a 72.

Overnight pacesetter Baddeley surrendered his lead by triple-bogeying the opening hole and fell back into a tie for 13th at 12 over after shooting an 80.

Cabrera began the final round four shots off the pace at six-over on Sunday but surged into the lead and despite bogeys at 16 and 17 posted a one-under-par 69 that set a target of five-over 285 that was too good for his challengers to match.

Cabrera had six previous top-10 finishes in majors, tying for fourth at the 1999 British Open, tying for eighth last year at the Masters and tying for seventh at the 2001 U.S. Open.
