First off, congrats to American Idol. 40.6 million people in the last half of its finale. That's astounding. Most watched show of the year, baby. Upfronts In light of recent events (viz. predictable, massive shifting of NBC's schedule, thank you Grey's Anatomy) I feel as though I should begin with what used to be my favorite network (as if there were any reason to have one), NBC. There's so much to say, and so many different ways to organize it. Let's go nightly: Monday: I honestly could care less for Deal Or No Deal, but every network has to one ratings-successful enigma. I'll just steer clear. Now Heroes is a completely different story. I hate to admit this publicly, but I have a weakness in my heart for super heroes. It's like God answered my prayers, only fifteen years after peak of my childish obsession. There's still that child in me though, and I know I'll be there for this show's premiere. As for its chance for success, I really think it's up in the air. NBC's got to advertise out the wazoo for Monday at 9 to be host to a hit. I hope it works! Aaron Sorkin has never really interested me at all. His shows tend to have a superficial tonality that I think abandons certain qualities entertainment value. Studio 60 On the Sunset Strip might work, but I'll have to see it to believe it. I hear the chemistry in the cast will help, and I know that's all I'll need to watch. But wait? No Medium? Well, it's being saved for midseason, and one might point out that it's been losing viewers steadily and the season finale was nothing to be proud of. Just under ten million people tuned in. At least there's a back up now for whatever fails NBC early, which undoubtedly will be more than what Medium can pick up the slack for. Tuesday Oh Friday Night Lights. Oh Kyle Chandler. Oh football, oh family dramas. If I wanted a tv show hybrid of the least interesting things to me, I would have asked for one. Even though I haven't seen anything of the show, the thought that keeps replaying in my mind is the Camden family of 7th Heaven coming together to become a mean, lean family football machine. I'm gay, and I don't have to put up with it, so I won't. Now, if I were at NBC, and if I were sitting in a conference room and one of constituents said, "let's put more than one Law & Order on the same night!" I would have fired them then and there! I understand they want the loyal viewership for SVU to revitalize the fraying CI version, but did they ever think that comparisons might rule the minds of those loyal SVU viewers? We all know which is better of the two, and I don't think this is a good decision. That move could ruin, one, if not both shows. We'll see though, I could be completely conservative in my views of how television scheduling should be handled. Wednesday Five words. John Lithgow and Jeffrey Tambour. Two of my favorite actors are starring in a comedy, and I will be watching at least the premiere (and a few episodes thereafter). However, when has anyone ever watched TV at 8 on Wednesdays? Remember Ed? Woops! I hope that 20 Good Years paired with 30 Rock will be a winning combination. I love Tina Fey, I loved Mean Girls (which she penned), so I'm hoping that this will replace the lack of Arrested Development in my life. Though I know it could never be as good, I think 30 Rock has a chance, at least in my heart. I've never watched The Biggest Loser and I don't care to start. But isn't it exciting that it's gaining momentum? Who knew? As for Kidnapped, how can you go wrong with the creators of the all-too-soon-canceled Karen Sisco and the cast of Jeremy Sisto (Elton from Clueless anyone??), Dana Delaney, and Academy Award winner Timothy Hutton (he broke my heart in Ordinary People)? I'll be watching, and I hope others will. Thursdays I adore My Name Is Earl, and love The Office, but I liked them on at 9. I don't what it was. I'm just being picky, but I'll watch them at 8 too. What other comedies would I watch? Hm??? Hmmmmmm????! Another Deal at 9. I say "no deal." Oh ER, you're still on aren't you? Having a creative rejuvenation, are you? Well, I only know because I read about it. Friday Crossing Jordan is NOT midseason trash anymore, now it's Friday trash! Las Vegas. I just don't know what to say because I don't care! And finally. The 10 pm spot on Fridays. Remember when you had to send your grandmother to the "old people's home," because she'd been "on air" too long? Well, you put her there anyway, because you know she's going to die. She'll dye her hair though, and use the fact that she had such respectable children as reason to let her out of her geriatric prison, but you won't buy it, because her time is coming. I'm sorry, this whole time I've really been talking about the aging stalwart Law & Order. Isn't that a shame? They said they're making cast changes, but that, coupled with this killer (genuinely) time slot, no one is going to care, unless NBC is somehow convinced to let grandma out of her home to experience a tragic form of self-neglect. I know, it's long, but good right? Who am I kidding? I'm the only one that read this, and, coincidentally, the only one that wrote this.
