Dragon Age: Origins Gamespot Review

I want to start off by saying; Thank you Gamespot! You convinced me to get Dragon Age: Origins.

I have had mixed feelings regarding this game. The world and the atmosphere have seemed to be phenomenal, but the gameplay itself have looked somewhat stale. However, after watching Gamespot's review, I have been convinced to get it. It seems like a great experience and 50 hours not counting the side quests isn't too bad either.

I'm not sure what class I will be playing yet, but I will have to play around with the character creator a little more to make my decision I guess.

Personally it doesn't hurt to hear that the PC version is superior in some aspects as that is the one I'm getting. No need to have a good PC if you're not going to use it, right? Now it's off to Steam to pre-purchase the Deluxe Version for some extra in-game items. Only three days to go for us Europeans. Americans are lucky enough to get it today.

Are you getting Dragon Age: Origins?

Semi-old great game of the week #4

What could possibly be in store for this week? I hope you like assassinating people, because that is what this week's recommendation is about. The semi-old great game of the week is Hitman: Contracts.

The best thing about Hitman: Contracts is the fact that the gameplay mechanics are well developed and don't differ that much from Hitman: Blood Money. So even if it is about five years old, it doesn't feel dated, as the first entry in the series might feel.

Contracts takes some of the older levels and gives you upgraded versions of them. Hitman: Codename 47 had some great levels, but the gameplay felt a little primitive at times and didn't really allow the game to reach its full potential. This problem is resolved to a large extent in Contracts as it implements newer gameplay mechanics into older well designed levels. Great old levels with better gameplay. Can't go wrong with that one, right?

Well, not entirely wrong. There is one level that is a slightly disappointing. That is best level of the first game, and possibly the best level of the entire franchise, Traditions of The Trade. The main problem with this level is that it feels downgraded in a sense. Some areas that were not restricted in the first game suddenly are, the place feels deserted etc.

There are of course some new levels as well. They are well designed and will leave you with a smile on your face.

All in all I just want to say that this really is a great entry in the series. It mixes new with old and the result is a satisfying experience. Every game in the series is worth playing, but if you had to choose one, I would definitely recommend this one. The Hitman Collection is available on Steam, but for some reason it does not contain Contracts. Heard there were some legal issues with the musical score which prevented them from putting it there. Still, you should check it out and give it a try.

Check back next week for a new game. See you around.

Tekken 6 Limited Edition Unboxing

I received Tekken 6 Limited Edition for the PS3 in the mail yesterday. It was quite exciting to get it open and see the contents. Here is what I found.

The front of the box, featuring Kazuya Mishima. Pretty nice.

The back of the box had what you'd expect; some in game screens, a little text and the full roster of characters.

Then you have a Tekken 6 hoody, a black one. The 360 version has a white one. Not too bad.

Probably the coolest piece of content is the art book, which features some beautiful pictures of characters that are in the game. Don't know if everyone is in there, haven't checked yet. Still pretty nice. Then you have a gigantic poster of Lars, the somewhat gay but still good fighter. You also get a manual and last but not least, the game itself.

So this is pretty much everything that comes with the Limited Edition of Tekken 6. There is also the Arcade Stick Edition, but personally I didn't feel that it was necessary to get it, since I prefer the regular controller. That's about it, see you around.

Semi-old great game of the week #3

New week means new game. What do I have in store this time? Think slow motion combined with a ton of guns and I think you'll have it figured out. Know which game I'm talking about? That's right, Max Payne.

This game was released in 2001 and added something new to the gaming industry. This gimmick if you will is its greatest strength gameplay wise. I'm of course talking about the bullet time effect. This is what makes this title special and it is also what you want more and more of it every time.

The story is about the appropriately named Max Payne who tries to solve the mystery behind the murder of his wife and baby. It is told in a dark and creative way through pictorial cut scenes filled with atmosphere and some incredible voice acting from James McCaffrey adding to the already intriguing plot line.

As far as gameplay goes it is a lot of fun. The game relies on the bullet time effect to keep you entertained. After a while it can start to feel a little repetitive as the game doesn't offer you much variety. All you have to do is take a break and you will soon be back for more. For some reason it is extremely satisfying to hurl yourself down a set of stairs in order to take out a few bad guys. The story is what keeps you going after a while though hour after hour. Yes, it is that good.

If you want a better look you can as always check out Gamespot's review.

I reckon many of you have already played both this one and the sequel, but if you haven't you definitely should.

A Tribute To The King

With Tekken 6 on our doorstep, only a week away for the North American market and 10 days for the European gamers, I thought it would be appropriate to pay tribute to the King of the series.

This Mexican wrestler simply known as King has been with us from the start, always wearing that jaguar mask, never revealing his face. Utilizing his wrestling skills to take down opponents, his deadly combos leave no man or woman standing. Seriously though, he has some long and brutal combos.

I remember the first time I played Tekken. While scrolling through the characters, I laid my eyes on King, his awesome appearance had me hooked. At that time I was pretty young and didn't really try to learn anything advanced, I just liked him and therefore I used him a lot. It was when I got a little older that I discovered the real awesomeness in him. Killer combos, powerful hits and stylish moves, that's all I need. One of the bad things about him though, is the fact that he is kind of slow in comparison to some of the other characters, which makes him a little vulnerable. But once he gets his hands on you, the round might very well be over.

Of course there are a lot of interesting fighters in the game, but King has always been and will always be my favorite of the bunch. Why? Because no one can replace him, no not even Armor King. King is an appropriate name for this fearsome combatant.

Who is your favorite character and why?

Semi-old great game of the week #2

Blood sucking vampires ready to eat you. Sound good? Then keep on reading.

This week's recommendation is Vampire The Masquerade: Blood Lines

This blood sucking title was released back in late 2004 and brought a unique experience to the market. It portrays a World of Darkness in which vampires and werewolves exist, and it throws you right into the mix. The strength of this game is really the atmosphere, which is simply phenomenal. It is really immersive and makes you like you are part of the world.

You play as a character that you create choosing from a variety of vampire clans and customize his/her skills to your liking. After that you set out to explore parts of LA and socialize with both the natural and supernatural community. There are a ton of missions to take on as you progress through the game to earn experience and be able to improve your character. You will have a great time exploring every little corner and take part of the plot.

The source engine, which is in my opinion one of the greatest engines of all time, keeps the game from feeling out dated even though it is 5 years old. There are some bugs in the game. A couple of patches have tried to fix these issues, and they have to some extent, but the game can be pretty messed up from time to time.

Check out Gamespot's review to get a better look at this unique game.

It can be a little hard to come by if you want a physical copy, but if you have a Steam account just go to the store and get it from there. The price isn't too high. It's definitely worth it.

Semi-old great game of the week #1

I apologize for the title, guess I could have chosen a shorter one. Anyway, there are many great games that a lot of people, including myself, miss out on. So I thought; why not help out my fellow gamers by recommending games that are cheap since they are kind of old, but still great? That is exactly what I am going to do. So what will be the first game to start off the list?

SWAT 4

This first person shooter was released back in April 2005 for the PC and at first it didn't really catch my eye. Basically what I thought was; "Yeah, another FPS. No thanks." It was actually a coincidence that I even tried the game out. A couple of months after release I went home to a friend of a friend who had recently purchased the game. Since I had it in front of me I thought; "Heck, I might as well give it a try." It's a good thing I did try it out. Let me tell you why.

I might as well start out by giving you the a run down of the basics. As the name clearly states you are part of a SWAT team, the commander of the team to be more exact, and it is your job to direct your fellow members through a series of situations gone sour. There are in 13 missions in total, including an abandoned house, fast food restaurent, car shop etc.

There are a lot of options when it comes to directing your team, you can equip them however you see fit, split them up, give orders on how to clear areas etc. Instead of me trying to explan every little detail about it, just check out Gamespot's video review and see for yourself.

If you decide to try this game and like it, I can only recommend the expansion, SWAT 4: The Stretchkov Syndicate.

I really hope that you give this one a try if you haven't done so already. If you have any recommendations for me, please share your thoughts. Well, that's it for now. Next week I'll post another recommendation of a semi-old great game that you might have missed out on.
