I was overcome ina fit of retail therapy the other day. Went out to get Soul Caliber IV on x-box, and came home with a PS3 40GB and Soul Caliber IV for PS3 ;) Only got that and Grand Turismo at the moment, but I have a bunch of Blu-Ray films: Planet Earth, Spiderman 1-3, Casino Royale, Oceons 11, X-Men 3, Superman The Movie and Superman Returns and Batman Begins.
So, first impressions? Blu-ray is most definately awesome! I was a bit worried that I wouldn't be able to tell the difference as that was the primary reason for the purchase but maaan, I can't even look at my DVD's now :D . The console is nice, I like all the configurable options as I'm a techy, and thats something that is sorely lacking on the X-Box. (Noticeably there are some features missing, for example, there are Music Settings, BD/DVD Settings but no Video settings for other videos such as divx etc???) The charging cable was stupidly short, I mean, I wanted to use my PS3 straight away so I was sat with my nose to the screen.
I'm missing the play music while in game feature thats on the x-box, but that isn't that big an issue. xvid video quality on the PS3 seems a lot better than the x-box, although codec support not as good (some files act a bit strangly, but this may be a sharing protocol issue? I'm using mediatomb on ubuntu)
At the moment, I keep going back to the x-box for Halo3 and UT, so I need to get an FPS for the PS3 as those are primarily my game type. Resistance seems to be the one that comes up again and again, maybe COD4 although I'm a sci-fi guy.
All in all, great! I can now sit square in the middle of the console wars and grin.....until someone mentions the wii.... ;)
