Illmind RAPES this beat. I mean, GOD DAMN. This beat alone is why his name has to be mentioned among the top producers. So soulful. This is what soul should sound like. If Supa gets this kind of production -- Illmind is, according to what Supa said on his My Space, going to totally produce his next CD -- his next CD is an instant classic, plain and simple.
This is Phonte's best verse. Every time I hear it, I get chills. Dude is just speaking the truth.
The head n**** in charge is still dreamin'
Of an industry where hot s***'s rewarded and dope s***'s recorded and dumb s***'s ignored and I,
Sold my heart to the world, nobody bought it and
Everybody made a beeline
Quick to say that LB was on the decline
Hold up, rewind -- wasn't it just a year or so ago when we was those same ***** everybody was behind?
But that's how it is when you dealin' with the evil
Get a little status and they think you too regal
That's the nature of people
Why you think muh f***ers like to feed pigeons but try to shoot eagles?
And if you too feeble you won't make it, I admit
Sometimes I thought about walking away from this b****
Cause we been **** around for too damn long
But she too damn young
And I'm just too damn grown
Who can' t relate to this?
"This is how I like my ish to sound!"
Best part of the song:
"I WANT YOU TO PON DE REPLAY DRAMA! PON DE REPLAY! ZUP ZUP ZUP ZUP ZUP ZUP!"
"Give em one more chance, man. RUN DAT **** DA **** BACK MAN!"
Mos Def's verse is still wack on paper, but I like it way more than when I first heard it.
Big Pooh is ALMOST the star of this song... If he spit like this all the time, he could give even Phonte a run for his money.
You don't know about me, you don't know my life!
You don't know everything I go through to write
You don't know my plight, you don't know my fight!
And still, mother ****ers wanna steal my light!
That's right, I'm right back with a gripe that's sick
I done went another level, raise prices quick
You know, Big Doh always told me rap with a chip
I'ma do you one better son, I scribe with a dip
That's borderline great, the best in all states
Fifty-plus some, dumb **** hum (?)
If you hum (?) you can hear me, I speak clearly
So my two sisters hear me and Ronny (?) cheer me, sincerely
I carry heavy burdens on my back, done
Seen a lot of pain and my heart stay trapped
Brothers on the grind tryna get that scratch
From those pages get turned and your plans get scrapped!
We back to the hustle where they fighting over scraps
In your face, get played cause you tryin' to watch your back
My man, seen many **** go like that
This here, real life ain't no rewinding it back!
His emotion is raw, and he's never rhymed better. The beginning of this verse -- first 7 or 8 lines -- are ridiculous.
Phonte just rips it with raw quotables:
It seem like, the more I achieve, the more they expect
Cause it ain't nothing that breeds seeds like success
And though you might expect *****s to lose they calls or drop the ball, that ***** Tay ain't like the rest
To get it short, I'm more than just your average rap *****
Or whatever you wanna call it, call it music
I call it my life performance
Call 'em fans, I call 'em my life supporters
Whether they paying or they sneakin' through
These are the people that I am speaking to
So y'all rap ***** can't follow me up, you can't bottle me up
****, I'm a well of inspiration, *****!
Word.
Now listening to Little Brother - Hate. More quotables:
Stop all the fame and applause
And name-calling at them famous award shows
***** that's brainless and lord knows what would happen
If I wasn't rapping for them lost souls
Who feel that hip-hop's at a crossroads
And this that type of **** they can feel in their torso
I wish this **** was easy, oh not so
Even the road less traveled is littered with pot holes
And booby traps
Tay is more than hot flows and booty raps
But, ****** who miss they shot can't seem to handle that
Those might be the best five lines Tay's ever spit.
Hmm ... I'm not sure how much you'd be into the non-rap music I listen to these days, but thanks for the compliments.IsThisIt_basic
Try me. Hey, Tilly and the Wall owned. :(
Blood Brothers, older Incubus, ATD-I, etc. ... it was all stuff just leading me up to where I am now, musically. I loved that stuff so much because it was the closest thing I could find to what I was really looking for ... maybe that's why I don't listen to much non-rap music these days; because I no longer have to keep searching for bands that deliver what I want.
I keep telling myself I'll eventually go back and find the best rock stuff, after I'm exhausted with rap ... ONE of these days I will, like when I delved into metal just because I felt desperate for something new, but right now rap just owns my life. Give me more recommendations, though, and I'll DL them. :8
As for the whole Taking Back Sunday thing ... they've done a couple fun songs, and I really am a Midwest Emo junkie ... don't get me wrong, the San Diego scene is my favorite, but lately I think I've even been listening to more midwest emo than rap. The real problem with Tacking Back Sunday is just that there are so many people that do the sound better, and they don't get half the publicity TBS does.
Man, I liked Saves the Day, Thursday, Taking Back Sunday, Pretty Girls Make Graves, etc. WAAAAY before all that crap got played on MTV and the radio. I HATE that that happened, because only Saves the Day still makes the same great music, and you can still tell their style changed hugely with the album they released this year. I listened to all that crap in middle school, freakin five years ago, so don't think I was hopping on some bandwagons.
Other bands I didn't mention: The aforementioned Pretty Girls Make Graves, Muse, Mewithoutyou, The Strokes, Hot Hot Heat.
9th Wonder rips this beat up. PERFECT beat for this theme of song. DOPE sample. YOU... got to have flash! And flare! L.E.G.A.C.Y. comes in with a dope verse.
"They try to hang me and I was dope on a rope"
Of course, the star is Phonte...
Excuse me playa, no I don't mean to bother ya
But just in case the beat is hittin too hard for ya, just note
Phonte is doing his job cause I, stay on the scene like cinematographers
Word. This isn't Phonte at his lyrical finest, but his flow + beat = amazing.
