Ridiculously good, ignore the people saying it's not a Max Payne game, it definitely is, it's just an updated one. People seem to forget that MP2 came out 9 years ago, things have changed since then. At first I felt restricted by the cover system, like the game was forcing me to use it, but once you get used to it, and know when you should and shouldn't run into a gun fight, it's not different to the other MP games, the same stood true there, you could never just blindly run into a fight, even whilst shoot dodging, or you'd end up lying on the floor full of holes.
Story wise it 's definitely missing Sam Lake's...thing...that he does, which personally I've never liked all that much, the story now is much more simple and straightforward, you can see what's happening, you don't just have Max's somewhat cryptic nonsense to make sense of it, but Max's internal monologue is probably better than ever, Game Trailers I think said something about it at times feeling cheesy but to me that was the point, it's got a bunch of lines in there ("By now I'd killed more cops than cholesterol") that strike me as being darkly comical and I loved that about it.

"Ignore the people who disagree with me". Please. The current "health" system makes games too easy. There are no comic strips in MP3, there's no noir story/ambience, regardless of how "innovative" the overused brazilian slum concept may be.
"Cryptic nonsense"? See? that's the reason why most nowadays games are made shallower in order to look understandable and appealing to younger audiences. What the first two MP games offered was much more than nonsense storywise, it offered an insight towards an afflicted being who struggled for survival. But of course, flashy flashy goes what the masses want.
