I say Microsoft should give up on Japan and concentrate on North America, we're your bread and butter, we're your hardcore, we're the onesgiving you constant support, nothing can stop the Wii in Japan at this point anyways.GodModeEnabled

Pretty much...To be honest. They have the golden oppurunity now. Its not like Sony is doing much better...and it seems like in general. Japanese are prefering more casual games. While NA and Europe remain the same...maybe even better to be honest. But its like...you may miss out on quite a few Japanese eccentric titles...but take Capcom for instance. They are going by worldwide now totals...not just region. Thats is thier aim. MS if they concentrate on taking Europe and NA can almost force alot of those titles on to thier system kind of like PS2 did in the past.

I don't think it's a case of mistaking what's on show for a real state of affairs - it's the representation being a little insensitive and negative and even a little too close to home. Like Acenso mentioned there is ahuge HIV epidemic in the region, lack of eduation and religious views hamper safe sex messages and then aresident evil game is set there where everyone is infected. And again the areas they are depicting, things like the corrogated roof of a shanty town where people struggle to survive on the outskirts of society, and now these people who need help more than anything else - these people are depicted as infected, savage killers. It just doesn't sit well.

This reminds me of the whole Dutch PSP "White is coming" adverts, some were non-plussed, others felt uncomfortable. There are no clear lines here.

The only thing is that Somalia does not have an Aids epidemic. People might talk, as they usually do, but I dont see any serious back lash or any kind of development problems resulting in the future.

Pretty much worse case senerio here. And to be honest...not like its a bad thing. They can not ban the game or anything. To be honest...it would just give the game more attention...more RE Fans ^_^

RE5 is a survival horror game, not a documentary or even a 'Saving Private Ryan' style game (i.e. something which uses fictitious characters to depict something that could have happened set against the backdrop of something that actually happened). I find it impossible to believe that anyone will draw conclusions about Africans based on RE5 (I had never heard of the continent before RE5, and RE5 has told me all I need to know).

CarnageHeart

Doesn't nesscarly have to be a direct connection now...When an extremely bias person is looking for an excuse. He will find one...Just go to system wars for examples ^_^. If a person is content on some how trying to prove this can be an act of racism...or is some great political analogy on how countries view the Crisis in Africa. They will find a way to spin it so. Remember the most important thing about truth...The one whose preception it is told from. Some, can some it up to sheer coincidence...others coincidence is nothing but an illusion.

If someone cares...if someone wants to try and make a name for himself...be known as the great civil rights activist...blah blah yadady. They will do it. People do it all the time. They make connections to how they want to precieve...They look for something that proves what they want to prove. A Comfirmation and Selective Bias. They only see what they want to see

...and apparently, not being region free is a big minus. Huh?nopalversion

Its starting to get to point were it looks like they are more looking for excuses now then actual reasons...

Interesting enough though...360 found a nice Niche audience in Japan. Again...Game attachment rate very impressive. But not a lot is all. Seems quite popular with the hardcore crowd in Japan

I agree. After all, if a virus epidemic broke out in any African state, at least half of the victims would be coloured. I mean, killing Spanish villagers is OK and killing African villagers isn't?

nopalversion

Its tricky spot really... Since it is a Japanese company. If it was an American...Oh god...First trailer and we would be hearing about it already. But since it is a japanese...Who really never had any interaction with African Americans till very recently and even that is limited. How to prove its racial intend. To be frank...They do not have a handicap to speak. There is no history really of mistreat towards African Americans. They have a few incidents...but thoses can be shrugged off. And the most important thing is...Media Preception. How are they going to view it? Could they view it as...oh Japanese are clearly thinking lowly of the Africans? Or...could it backfire and just say they are obviously trying to make a race war out of something that wasn't, they are interfering with the freedom of speech and art(Cough...Why no complaints against RE4?)

To be honest...My guess is that it will draw more attention towards the violence...and how it is a Virus in Africa *Aids* then actual racial intend. Heck...They may even try to spin it and say it is a social satire or something. And how people...are obviously just killing Africans from AIDs because they are not helping enough, or something else like a view on Africa and the low quality of life. Stupid? Of course...What do you think Racism is now? Stupidity.

[QUOTE="superartan"]why don't they just say why the real reason they don't buy 360 is because it's not made by a Japanese company? I specially like the Microsoft doesn't do any original game for Japanese one, Blue Dragon and Lost Od don't count over there? :SKyanMehwulfe
Yeah, since, you know, they hate American trends, fashion, fast food, and music over there, too. Massively xenophobic and all. Completely.

Okay...I think it is time to settle this

Just because the 360 is not selling well over there does not make them hate American products or something like that

And just because the Ipod sold well...Does not mean they still are not xenophobic or racist.

Could the Japanese just like the Wii better? The PS3 isnt really sitting pretty either...

And could the Ipod have just sold because it was about 2 or 3 years more advance then any other MP3 player at the time?...

Want to say they are blantly Racist? Well the Younger Japanese generation really seems to embrace many American trends, such as Hip Hop.

Want to say they are not? How about Laws that restrict foreigners and such in school activaties? Or lets bring in the view on how Japanese normally view...cripples, special needs, etc.

Why is it so hard to accept...That some are obviously extremely racist. And others are not?

[QUOTE="gaminggeek"]You know I'm getting weird vibes from RE5. Going to an impoverished unamed african nation and shooting up the poor as a white guy. Weird vibes, for some reason I forsee some kind of controversy lined up for this game at some point. rragnaar

See...One catch...Japanese are making it.

Maybe I'm misreading you, but it almost sounds like you are saying that the game couldn't have ethnocentric, and racist undertones because it is being made by the Japanese. Don't get me wrong, I like Japanese culture, I've studied the language for two years, and I have pretty much liked every Japanese person I've met. That said, the Japanese might be one the most ethnocentric, elitist, racially biased cultures that I have ever studied. I know it isn't fair to make such broad generalizations, but this is the country that generally regards the outside world as a bunch of stupid foreigners. I don't intend to inflammatory at all here. I have a lot of respect for the Japanese... they just aren't the most enlightened bunch when it comes to matters of race.

I was actually being a bit cynical and sarcastic with it... Yes you were misreading it...But Its probably my fault. I should have italics it something along thoses lines.
