Going too high on a 1GB card leaves no memory for other processes. It can actually negatively impact performance if you max the graphics memory usage. Because what you're saying is to dedicate XXXX MB to textures and only textures. If some other effects or processes come along that need more memory they'll have no where to go! They'll have to wait (lag). Never go beyond half of what you have. Same goes for using the "heapsize" function in source engine games or allocating RAM for others.

I've been dreaming of Age of Mythology 2 since elementary school. Unfortunately, it's a dream that will go unrealised. With Micro$oft closing down Ensemble and going full console mode, I don't thing they'll ever release a true PC game ever again.
