Depends on the game, in the past (even in the PS2 era) the technology to accurately lip sync dialogue on every cut-scene wasn't really fully exploited so we only got a few FMVs where lip sync issues were apparent (Final Fantasy X). Now that the technology can utilize it better and more it has become more apparent (Final Fantasy XIII).

If you're not older than 22 then It's almost impossible to fully realize how revolutionary the technology of Doom was back in the day. The only way you could get a vague sense of its impact is reading reviews written at the time of release or watch video reviews recorded back then. I'd recommend watching Gamepro TV clips on Youtube to get a sense of how gaming technology in the early-90's was interpreted, we were psyched just to have clear voice clips in a game.
I'm 25, and when I got the Sega Saturn a couple of months after its release I remember being left in awe, my mouth just wide open. We first popped in it Sega Worldwide Soccer (the first one). And all I recall is the sheer mindblowing impression it left on me. "OMG!!!!!!! a clear video on a game?? Clear music?? Clear sound effects??? OMG!!!". I also remember when play-by-play commentary was introduced on its '97 incarnation. "Are you kidding me?? He actually comments on the game just a real soccer game on TV?!?!?!?!".
I honestly miss those days.
I'd say a failure software-wise (which is what counts in the end). You could count the number of good Sega CD games with 2 hands and the only games I really cared about for it were Snatcher, Sonic CD, and Captain Tsubasa.

I only care about Castlevania, Assassin's Creed, Sonic Colors, Epic Mickey, and whatever Kingdom Hearts game is coming.
I forgot to mention Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon on the N64 .
I have it, bought it from a friend. But what about the grind issue?
Yoshi's Story on the N64
The PS2's Kingdom Hearts games
Ok, so I played CT way back when Final Fantasy Chronicles was brand-new on the PSX, I think it was 2001~ish, and I recall how I played it purely to see what the fuss was about (played Cross before it so I was curious), which in turn made me beat it with a Gameshark.
Now I got it on the DS and I was hoping I could play it/beat it the right way this time around, but what turned me off is that friends of mine told me how no matter what they do they can't seem to level-up high enough to face Lavos in the end (even with most sidequests done and the Masamune acquired).
So yeah, what's your take on this? Is the game really that much demanding grind-wise to buff up your characters?
NOTE: please keep story spoilers to a minimum, I've forgotten most of the plot and I'd lke to re-experience it myself.
