Pyschotic

Well on Wednesday I got the Pyschout achievement for Crackdown, and my neighbor announced his intention to buy the game.  Also, yesterday I downloaded the Halo 3 Beta.  Now, I've never really been a fan of the Battle Rifle and now I find it almost completely useless.  The missile pod is an interesting addition, as well as the shield grenade, portable grav lift and trip mines.  Picking up, and carrying around, turrets is fun too.  However, on the whole I'd rather just play Crackdown.

Illogical?

One of the kids who goes to my church's Youth Group fairly regularly accused the Xbox 360 of being a knockoff of the PS3.  Obviously this sent the two of us into a wonderful thrity minute argument intermingled with punches, kicks, and yo momma jokes.  Now I've no problem with him loving his PS3, heck if I had the money I might actually buy one, but I would like to know how the heck a system that came out over a year earlier could possibly be called a knockoff of the PS3.  Now this isn't talking about hardware, games, or any of that, this is just about release dates.  It'd be like if you bought a new IPod and then when I decided to go buy a Zune a couple years later(not so sure on the comparitive release dates for the two, but I do know that the IPod came first), and then I started off on a rant about the IPod being a knockoff/copy of the Zune.  That would just be stupid...

...Anyways I won the argument seeing as how I've not only got about 75 to 100 pounds on the kid, but I could probably bench press him.  Ahh, sweet victory....who the heck ever said violence never solved anyting?

Halo 3 Beta News

Here's some new news from Gamespot on the Halo 3 Beta:

Microsoft showed off the much-anticipated Halo 3 multiplayer beta in London this evening. The beta will be opened to a much larger audience later this month to let fans test the game, but this was the media's opportunity to check out the game ahead of time. The reaction thus far? Halo 3 looks and plays like a much-prettier version of Halo 2, and that's sure to please the game's millions of fans worldwide.

Six high-definition Samsung televisions were lined up and running the beta that will go on general release next Wednesday, and the Xbox 360 consoles were connected to each other via Xbox Live. The collected media were invited to enter the killing fields, and because it was the first time that one of the year's most anticipated games has been widely shown outside of the Bungie and Halo offices, there was no shortage of volunteers.

The first thing that strikes you about the Halo 3 beta is just how polished it feels. It's not like the beta is a hint of things to come and that you have to brush aside bugs, long loading times, and a number of other issues to enjoy the game--the beta runs at a solid frame rate, is graphically impressive, and feels well on its way to being the code that fans have every right to expect from the finished game. The player models in the beta are the same blue and red Master Chief variants that will be familiar to Halo players, albeit with new bells and whistles. The models themselves now feature rag-doll physics, meaning that dead bodies will bend and buckle according to the environment around them. When you're alive and you look down, you can now see your legs.

There are three levels in the beta: Snowbound, High Ground, and Valhalla. While the beta is limited to these levels, there are a number of gameplay modes. Rumble pit is the typical slayer, or deathmatch, mode, where it's every player for himself. Team slayer lets you team up with a maximum of three others to battle against another team of up to four. Team skirmish is an objective-based mode that can feature single-flag capture-the-flag, territories, and more. And then there's big team battle, which takes place only on the largest map in the beta, Valhalla. That's because Valhalla is the only one that can accommodate the 12 to 16 players in big team battle.

The matchmaking and party functionality in Halo 2 have been improved in Halo 3, but the one thing that remains the same is the ease of getting into a game. Halo 3 will sort through the games taking place and assign you and your opponents based on connection speed, preferences, and more. As before, there is a playlist of different games that Halo 3 cycles through, to provide a huge variety of different gameplay experiences. One match featured nothing but rocket launchers on the Snowbound map, which resulted in the predictable amount of chaos as players blew one another up. One of the nice new additions to matchmaking is the ability to "party up" at the end of the match. Let's say you meet some cool new teammates during a match. Using "party up," they can join your party (or you can join theirs), so the good times can keep on going. There's also an ability for the majority of players to "veto" a map or a game mode if they don't like it.

There are a variety of weapons, new and familiar, available in the beta to try--the trusty assault rifle, the brute shot, new spike grenades, the Spartan laser, machine gun turrets, missile pods, and more. We've noticed that returning weapons such as the needler and the brute shot have been tweaked for balance purposes. They now seem a bit more powerful.

We saw only a couple of the vehicles that will ship in the final game. The first was the familiar Covenant Ghost, the one-man (or one-alien) hover vehicle. And then there's the new Mongoose, the human two-man all-terrain vehicle that doesn't pack any weaponry but can transport you across the battlefield in a hurry. And while the Mongoose lacks weapons, the passenger is free to use whatever weapons he's carrying.

The controls should seem immediately familiar to any Halo fan, but there is a key difference. The right bumper on the gamepad is now used to mount and dismount vehicles, a necessary change because the X button is now reserved to deploy equipment, such as the shield grenade. Equipment is a brand-new addition to Halo 3 and adds a layer of depth and strategy to multiplayer games. There's the bubble shield, the portable grav lift, the trip mine, and the energy drainer. Another key change is that when you're not next to a vehicle, the left and right bumpers allow for the independent reloading of any weapons that you're holding in your hands. This lets you reload one weapon in your hands while you're firing with another, which will be incredibly valuable in a desperate fight.

Visually, the Halo 3 beta looks impressive. Yes, it looks like a higher-resolution version of Halo 2, but the textures and details are razor sharp, and there's a lush quality to the world that wasn't there before. You'll run through fields of flowers or your body will float in a tranquil pond. The high dynamic range lighting in the game also provides a realistic look to the lighting and the world. Meanwhile, there's a smoothness and fluidity to everything now that makes battles fun to watch.

Finally, the fun doesn't end when you stop playing. The beta does include the ability to film all your games. After the match is complete, you can save the film and watch it later or upload it to share with others. However, for the beta the saved film functionality is limited to first-person-only playback. In the final game, players will have full control over the camera, including fast-forward, reverse, pause, and slow-motion controls.

The Halo 3 beta is pretty impressive in terms of content, and Halo fans everywhere will surely put the beta through its paces when it's released next week. But the news for now is that everything looks great, and we can't wait for the hordes of players to arrive so we can get some big battles going.

Crackdown Xbox Live Update--(Free)

The new update for CrackdownTM is now available on Xbox LIVE® Marketplace. The update will install automatically next time you insert your Crackdown disc while connected to the service, and the update includes several cool new game play improvements.

(Note: This update is different from the new Crackdown download content packs, which are also now available on Marketplace. There's a free content download as well as a premium content download package.)

Get ready for more mayhem in Pacific City.

Get ready for more mayhem in Pacific City.

Check out the new features in this free update:

  • Reset Gangs: In place of the current option to reset the city's crime (unlocked by defeating all 21 bosses), the gangs can now be completely reset in the main campaign.
  • Easier Orb Hunting: Imagine how great it would be if when searching for the last remaining hidden agility orbs the audio range on each of them got wider as fewer remained ... well imagine no longer. Audio "ping" range is now gradually increased when searching for the last 50 percent of hidden orbs, and 20 percent of agility orbs.
  • Ground Strike: Available to a four star strength agent only, it is now possible to slam downwards while airborne by holding the attack button. The resulting strike is deadly to anything it hits, with an additional shockwave stunning nearby enemies.
  • Improved firing over low walls: Agents can now fire downwards at a greater angle while taking partial cover behind a low wall.
  • Targeting enhancements: You can utilize improved target lock prioritization of enemies behind vehicles, as well as live enemies over corpses.
  • Those damn fire hydrants! The fire hydrants were near indestructible but were also hard to spot. Now, though still best avoided, they can be smashed over for a far less unreasonable penalty.
  • Stunt Ring Visibility: Stunt Rings are now much easier to locate.
  • No "Lefty Flip" on vehicle control: The lefty flip on vehicle control has been removed so that left-handed players can aim with the left stick, but still steer with the right stick.
  • Persisting Charges and Mines: Limpet Charges (and the new Proximity Mines) will persist at all times within the game world and not just when within a certain range of the player.
  • Distant explosions: No matter where the explosion(s), you'll be able to see them provided your have a line of sight ... it's always a clear day in Pacific City!
  • Ramp Truck issues: Some vehicles didn't seem to get on well with the ramp truck, but we never intended this to be a SUV-only toy. Now none of them can get enough of it!
  • Camera enhancements: A better camera has been added for performing vehicle stunts or driving on near vertical surfaces (particularly with Top Level Agency SUV or the new Peacekeeper Buggy) as well as vertigo-inducing tweaks for those long leaps of faith.
  • Player-to-player precision shots: We've dropped the PvP lock-on but now another agent can be hit with a head or leg shot using normal targeting.

Crackdown DLC

For those of you who haven't seen the article here's what comes in the free DLC:

Keys to the City
One big addition is the ultimate Cheat Mode! Now you can use the city as your sandbox and do whatever you want.

Leap tall buildings with Super Agility.

Leap tall buildings with Super Agility.

Enter this mirror of the main Campaign for a clean-slate game that can be fully exploited and customized for a single play session (Achievements and leaderboards are disabled in this mode). For example:

  • Build a pile of 100 explosive drums at the top of the Agency Tower-then let it rip!
  • Spawn a ramp truck anywhere, and it stays there.
  • Create an agency vehicle or one of the new Peacekeeper vehicles any time, any place.
  • Set character skills however you want them, or just activate the accelerated skill leveling feature.
  • Check out Super Agent Agility to jump ridiculous distances, swim faster than a torpedo, and sprint faster than a speeding bullet (almost).
  • Try the Super Agent Strength to toss a truck with deadly accuracy farther than you ever dreamed. Boot enemies into the stratosphere!
  • Get the most out of the exciting selection of new weaponry by activating infinite ammo. Max out the selection at each supply point too!
  • Do all of this without skipping a beat of the action-the pop-up cheat menu is always available during play without pausing the game.

Vehicle Impounding
The Agency Garage has been given an overhaul-this was partly to accommodate the brand new Peacekeeper Vehicles, but also to allow Agents to impound their favorites so that they're always available ... in their preferred color.

Spawn Agency Vehicles anywhere in the city.

Spawn Agency Vehicles anywhere in the city.

Impounding is simple-just commandeer the vehicle and return it to the garage. Vehicles that aren't yet impounded are displayed as faint images, so you can see at a glance what's missing from your collection. The "Confiscator" achievement awaits those who simply had to catch 'em all.

Co-op Trophy Sequences
Want a trophy emblazoned with your gamertag that is displayed for you and your opponent every time you win at the existing game types? Of course you do!

Psychotic Mission Trials
A record is now kept of Time Trials completed at "Psychotic" difficulty. Scoring the maximum 21/21 isn't just the ultimate challenge that every true Agent of Justice should have the stones to take on, but it's also the only way to unlock the highly coveted "Psych Out" Achievement.

And here's whats in the 800 MS point pack:

Load up the rockets and take to the streets.

Load up the rockets and take to the streets.

New Vehicles
Three new choices are now available in the Agency garage.

  • Agency Buggy: The double wishbone suspension absorbs the bumps in spectacular fashion as it rides over anything-even when scaling near vertical surfaces. The roof-mounted, independently aiming mini-gun is activated with either B or  the Left Bumper.
  • Agency Racecar: This ridiculously powerful mono-cockpit race car has acceleration that blows away everything else in the city. With incredible grip and top speed, those road race leaderboard times are set to tumble!
  • Agency Armored Vehicle: Like the Agency Truck, the AAV can smash through barricades with ease. Tank-like in design, occupants are completely protected from assault. It's surprisingly fast and agile for its size, and rockets are fired from independently aiming main turret with either B or the Left Bumper.

Street Racing
Pacific City is finally free from crime. Agency activity is once again concealed behind closed doors. The remaining peacekeepers, having very little to do, quickly grew restless. To satisfy their lingering lust for danger, high risk Street Racing tournaments have been established across the city.

There are no rules in hardcore street racing.

There are no rules in hardcore street racing.

Compete in six different on and off road races across the city with six radically different vehicle options per circuit. Race against up to 11 other "do or die" opponents, including another player over Xbox LIVE®. Compare fastest race times as well as race wins for that session with your co-op "buddy." Post your fastest time per circuit to the online leaderboards. Take advantage of the world of Crackdown to win by any means necessary-create road blocks, hit gas tanks, or simply slam opponents into submission.

New Equipment
As if an Agent needed more ways to cause mayhem in Pacific City, even more weapons have been added to the already potent Agency arsenal.

Say hello to my little friend.

Say hello to my little friend.

Lock and load and take out criminals with these lethal new additions:

  • MSK Lobber: Mini-rockets are thrown out from the rotating muzzle section before their boosters ignite and swarm towards their target. The homing mini-rockets are incredibly agile making this the ultimate fire-and-forget weapon.
  • EX1 Proximity Charge: Similar to the standard issue Limpet Charge, these can be attached to any surface. A visible local field is generated when the charge is set. Enemy penetration of this field will result in detonation. In a bid to reduce the extensive civilian casualties lying in the wake of any crime fighting Agent, intelligent threat-sensing technology prevents the charge from detonating when a firearm is not detected. Unfortunately, the technology isn't quite intelligent enough to prevent detonation due to field penetration by another Agent.
  • HRX Harpoon: This deadly gas-powered mechanism is capable of launching a lethal, razor-sharp spear over large distances with incredible accuracy. It can be used to ensure enemies "stick around" when you need them to, or to attach perps to their vehicle if you need to take them downtown ... or around town.
  • MZ360 Mini-Gun: The ultimate fast-firing projectile weapon, this new blaster takes some time to "spin-up" to full fire rate, but the devastation is incredible. It comes with a bountiful supply of high-caliber ammunition.
  • VS1 Cloaking Device: This is rhe perfect device for the Agent that likes his action served psychotic, or for anyone that just needs to get under the radar from time to time. It renders you barely visible and off radar. The VS1 is fuelled by Agency suit armor-when depleted an Agent can find themselves distressingly vulnerable.

New Game Types
These new competitive game types will make sure that things never get boring in Pacific City.

  • Max-Agility Rooftop Races: Compete solo or with two players in races across the city rooftops. There are nine new races in total, each with its own solo and co-op leaderboards. Four are with Los Muertos, three with The Volk, and The Shai-Gen play host to the remaining two. No, you won't need to complete these too for the existing "Over Our Heads" Achievement!
  • Stockpile: Each district (including Agency Island) hosts a Stockpile game-clearly identified with its unique beacon. Stockpile can be played solo or in co-op. The aim is to collect all the game specific orbs (also marked on the tracker) in the fastest time. The best times are uploaded to the online leaderboards. Two players can work cooperatively to find all the orbs in the fastest possible time, or simply compete for the highest score when the time runs out. In the case of competitive play, it doesn't always pay to do the grunt work of collection-when an Agent is killed he drops a third of his spoils.
  • Checkpoint Chase: This is a highly addictive two-player competitive game that makes the very most of the world of Crackdown. The game can only be initiated in one place-the Agency Garage. A random target destination is identified somewhere on the city, but is only marked on the tracker (not the map). The first person to reach the destination gains a point and activates the next checkpoint. The winner is the first to 10 points. Other than that, Checkpoint Chase has no rules!

  • Rocket Tag: The ultimate competitive combat event! Each of the 21 gang boss lairs now also plays host to a game of Rocket Tag. When the game is activated the players are randomly assigned as "hunter" and "hunted." The hunter has a straight-shootin' "Hotshot" rocket launcher ... and more ammo than he could ever need! The hunted has ... a pistol. To win, the hunted player must avoid being caught in the blast of the rocket launcher for 60 seconds. Simple!

You can essentially "try before you buy" by partnering cooperatively with another player that has purchased the "Getting' Busy Bonus Pack". This will give both players full access to pack's goodies, for that session. Trust us when we say that once you sample the fun of this pack, you'll want to "Get Busy" every time!

Achievements
The new content brings with it seven new achievements (taking the overall total to a nice round 50). Everyone knows that 100 points were missing from the original game-and in fact we're repaying that debt with some serious interest! In total the download pack unlocks a whopping 350 gamerscore!

This is straight from the xbox.com downloads page for Crackdown.

Webslinging...

Well I just got the Spiderman 3 game yesterday and dang is it fun!  Swinging around, webbing enemies, skydiving...it makes me feel like a monke-err spider.  Yeah its a really fun/addictive game, but I usually have more fun acting like a monkey/Tarzan, than acting like a spider and climbing up walls...I mean seriously, which is more fun, climbing up walls at a snails pace, or swinging around at 200 mph...

Vegas Again

Well I got Vegas yesterday evening and so far I have the Coop Story Novice achievement (which I got while playing on a friends copy of the disk on my 360), and the True Identity achievement(create a custom face).  Now its off to school...damn...
