Complicated if you allow handhelds, as GBA, DS and 3DS are all great systems
PS2 got EVERY multiplat game and its popularity meant that it got ports of big games from other systems, most of which run perfectly (e.g. Resi 4, Viewtiful Joe)
Also to everyone trying to make the case that there were not enough exclusives...
Stone cold classics
Ico
Shadow of the Colossus
Okami
Devil May Cry
Ratchet and Clank
Gran Turismo - nothing came close to A-Spec for AGES
Metal Gear Solid 3
Strongest JRPG line-up of any system
Dark Chronicle (Cloud 2)
Rogue Galaxy
Dragon Quest VIII
Persona 4
Final Fantasy X, X-2, XII
Star Ocean
God of War
Silent Hill 2 and 3
Sly Raccoon
Virtua Fighter 4
Zone of the Enders 2
Katamari Damacy
Disgaea
God Hand
Onimusha 2
Jak and Daxter
Underrated gems
Gregory Horror Show
Frequency/Amplitude - Harmonix's proof of concept for Guitar Hero/Rockband
Klonoa 2
Project Eden
Odin Sphere
It would be easier to make a list of great games of that generation that PS2 owners COULDN'T play
Halo 1 - as a single player FPS it wasn't beaten, but for multiplayer I always preferred Timesplitters 2
Ninja Gaiden - DMC 3 is arguably better, and there were also cult hits like God Hand and Viewtiful Joe
PGR 2 - definitely better than Ridge Racer
Panzer Dragoon Orta
Phantom Dust
Wind Waker - although Okami runs it close for best Zelda game of the generation
Double Dash
Eternal Darkness - it's not Silent Hill 2 but it is a damn good psychological horror game
Metroid Prime
Paper Mario Thousand Year Door - the best RPG not on PS2
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate - difficult but finally accessible. Dark Souls with Dinosaurs
Mario Kart 7 - the graphics are great, and the online play is reasonably good for Nintendo. maybe skip if you have WiiU
Fire Emblem - good tactical RPG, similar to advance wars (although i prefer Advance Wars)
Luigi's Mansion 2
Ghost Recon Shadow Wars - i think it is made by the guy who made the original X-Com. Really good, and very cheap unlike most 3DS titles
Zelda Re-releases are solid
Recommended DS:
Mario & Luigi Bowser's Inside Story - much better than the 3DS sequel
Advance Wars Dual Strike
Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow
Golden Sun Dark Dawn
FFIV
Recommended eShop:
Crimson Shroud - D&D style tabletop RPG. Short but good
Attack of the Friday Monsters - interesting narrative about growing up in Japan and the big monster shows of the time. Gameplay is very limited. Similar to To The Moon.
Shovel Knight - old school NES gaming updated
Mutant Mudds
Steam World Dig
Link's Awakening DX - weirdest Zelda title. Still good though. Better than the DS entries
Oracle of Ages, Oracle of Seasons - different feel as they are made by Capcom.
I'm a big FIFA player and football fan. But for other sports I don't want the full sim experince - I want things like NBA Street/NBA Jam and NFL Blitz.
Have they vanished or have I just not seen where they've gone?
