1. before you move, add things that you wish to keep in your sims' inventories. (this may not be possible if you are just playing the sims 2 without any of the expansion packs) this way they are not sold, and when you move to a new place, you don't have to buy all of your stuff all over again (beds, kitchen stuff, entertainment things, cars, etc...). it's also a good way to keep keepsakes (like photos, paintings or your first simolian if you run a buisness . . . or your university degree).
2. then save your game when your current home has been sufficiently ransacked.
3. exit to the neighbourhood
4. click on one of those tabs (i think it's the character one), and click on your family, then there should be an option to move them to the family bin. do this.
5. click on that family to select it from the family bin, and then place them in another empty lot, or home that they can afford.
6. click on that house, and then play with your family in their new place. (in their memories there will be a new memory which says 'moved into new house' or somehting like that)
