I'm hoping to break my WoW addiction and buy a PS3 in the next couple months, so I had a few questions. I've read the FAQ, and I've read the FAQ about picking out a good TV. They answered most of my questions, but I still have a few left, and a couple that I just want a straight up yes or no. Thanks for your time in advance!

1.) How are game saves saved? I'm assuming that PS3 game saves are saved to the harddrive since they wouldn't take up much space, but what about PS1 and PS2 games? Can they now be saved to the harddrive too, or do we still need memory sticks for those? I would like to be able to get rid of my memory cards is why I ask.

2.) I've heard this asked many times, but I just want a few opinions on it. I've always been under the impression as a gamer that playing games over wireless isn't very good. Is this different for the PS3? I'm a little anal about lag, but if it's very very minimal then I'll be happy.

3.) How do PS1-PS2 games play? Do they hang a lot on menu screens, etc? Or will I not even notice?

Thanks again.

I'm using a paperweight on the lid right now, so it'll apply a constant pressure everytime. I also noticed that there was alot of hair embedded into the actual drive that spins the disc. I scraped that all off and have been trying now again, still no luck though. I've had the main case cover off the entire time, (obviously) but I'm not sure how you would watch the laser react? Do you mean just opening and closing the tray because the laser doesn't move much during that process, and you can't watch it while there is a disc in there for obvious reasons. I'm willing to try anything short of exorcising it.

You did not say what model number though.

Anyways, what I would do is turn the plastic gear until the laser mechanism drops all the way. Then put the drive back together and the case back on. You do not need to srew everything together only the dvd drive need to be screwed into place so it does not move on you. I would then take a ps-one game and a silver back ps2 game and run those. Also the ps2 has a self diagnosis check system. It's hidden in the options of the the bios screen. I would run that once and see what it says. The ps-one (psx) games and silver backs ps2 games are the easiest for ps2 lasers to read. After they work, go onto the blue backs and the dvd's.

After each successful try, turn the gear to find the sweet spot where everything works well again. By the way does everything sound like it's running o.k. Is the fan running well.

Model number is SCPH-35001 The way I have it set up right now and the directions I'm using are here, http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars/3 So you're suggesting then that instead of holding the cover down on the DVD drive to actually screw it together? I guess that might make sure I'm not putting too much or too little pressure on the casing, but I don't think thats the issue, and the screws are an absolute pain to get in and out of there. I'll try running the diagnosis, I'd forgotten about that. Everything sounds fine, fan is running well.

What's the model number? You can find out the version and see if it's worth the trouble. Is it a eight screw or a ten screw case? Did you put the DVD drive back together each time? Also did you mark the original spot? The plastic gear only moves one direction. Do not mess with the screw that connects the gear to the ps2. Lastly, check the dvd lens and see if there is a scratch on it.72da9
It's an 8 screw case. I didn't put it back together each time as in putting all the screws back in, but I lined it up and fit it to the case, holding it down firmly but not enough where it wouldn't allow the disc to spin like the guide I was using suggested. I marked the original spot right away before turning the gear. Didn't mess with the screw. The lens doesn't APPEAR to be scratched, but I have trouble telling whether or not it is, which most likely means it's not. The only thing I can think of that I could possibly do still would be to turn the gear, put the disc in, put all the screws back in, and then stand it up right instead of flat to see if it works. As you can imagine though, turning that gear 4 clicks, putting it all back together and then tearing it all apart again over and over would be a pain. I might try it though tomorrow since I have the day off.

"I've cleaned the lens"

Did this, twice.  Once with the alcohol and a Q-tip, the second time was when I actually got the unit to read my lens cleaning CD.  I've tried everything that has been recommended. I'm looking for something not mentioned in the FAQ, or a professional opinion that my PS2 is gone.

I posted this in the DRE sticky thread as well but I haven't received a response, so I'm posting it here too.

I give up. 3 weeks ago I was playing several different games on my PS2, then I took a break from the PS2 and started playing some WoW with friends, I got bored of that and came back yesterday to fire up some FFXII to find that my PS2 was shot. It wont even read the lens cleaning CD that I bought a few months ago.

I've been playing with that damned cog inside the PS2 for the last 3 hours. I've ticked it every tick it can tick in hopes of finding the "sweet spot." I've cleaned the lens, I'm using a brand new PS2 game fresh out of the shrink wrap. I blew out all the dust and junk with some compressed air.

I've gotten it to recognize the PS2 game twice, but each time when I open and close the tray it doesn't recognize it again. I don't know what to do. Is there any thing else I can try before introducing this 200 dollar paperweight to a bat?
