Maybe if they made a good game they wouldn't be so far into the red. Seriously, when's the last time a decent Final Fantasy was released?
I know that Eidos and that set of subsidiaries are selling well but Square Enix themselves haven't made a good game in years. Time for them to get a grip.
@egger7577 The state lent them $75 million therefore if they fold the intellectual property of Amalur falls to the Governor and the people of Rhode Island.
With most of the world under-going financial turmoil... a £45 ($60) price tag is ludicrous. All it means is less money for the developers at the end of the day.
Most people can't afford to shell out on new games every week and it's causing a ripple effect that we've been watching for a good while.
The reason why COD Sells well is because people know they'll get their monies worth out of the multiplayer and they'll make that their main purchase for the year. I don't like the COD games but don't blame people for going down that route.
There's too much downloadable content, game pricing is getting higher each year and people don't have the money to keep up with the industry. Companies are unwilling to bend on pricing so all we're left with are closures, mergers and buy-outs.
As for the game I thought it was awesome, I loved it but it's time for companies to start taking stock of the issues and broaden their minds. $75 million on an untested IP is madness and it's obvious that the sales projections for it were insane too.
Good luck to the staff. I hope they get the money they are owed as the game was truly a labor of love. I hope they find work again soon.
@y3ivan I think there's space for both on the market. I loved Diablo 2 and loved Torchlight. A little competitions always good for business.
As for which one will do better... you've got me there. With the news that Torchlight 2 is too big for console (Arcade-wise) and they don't plan on doing a boxed version I'd say they'll lose a lot of sales. Console players loved Torchlight (and so they should!).
With Diablo 3, Blizzard has an idea of the games following so it'll do really well. I'd hazard saying probably better than Torchlight 2 until they bring it to consoles. Although, Diablo 3 is set for console too so should get interesting.
They can't afford to lock down used game sales. The independent stores won't put up with it and neither will the consumer. If they did, people would just jump to the console with no blocks, etc.
I'd be very surprised if they did lock consoles down.
@Ghosthunter54 @Chemistian @Gelugon_baat @Tripwolf I agree fully. pre-EA were the days when BioWare truly cared about the content they shipped... now it's just garbage thrown together by a bunch of money-hungry suits looking for a quick cash-in.
You've all managed to list the companies I no longer care about. Capcom and Square Enix constantly drive their IP's into the ground whilst Ubisoft and Rare pander to a mediocre sect (oh and don't forget that uPlay garbage).
It's a darn shame that we have to deal with having a 'constant internet connection' but nearly every company forces that these days. STEAM even needs it for verification. That's something that come with the times but it would be nice to have the option.
I've bought and downloaded Diablo 3 already. I have no qualms with the need to be logged into Battle.NET as for the last 6 years I've had to do so anyway to play WoW (which I left 2 years ago) and StarCraft 2. For me personally, it's not such a big deal but I do feel for those without constant connections.
I am starting to wonder if the turn-around on titles is too long though. Companies are jumping back to old franchises which is great but that's after 10+ years of waiting for the fans. Even though many are excited... others have lost the drive to care.
