Hardcore and softcore/casual is a term thrown around so loosely, it starting to resemble a 40 year old hooker.
Hardcore players play games as their main source of entertainment (AKA, their biggest source of entertainment is video games, taking up most (if not all) of their free time)/get payed to play games. The only field where hardcore and softcore have a broader meaning is in an MMORPG, as casuals generally just cannot keep up with the hardcore (who will be raiding, have the best items, and have a /played time longer than the run time on every season of South Park combined).
MMORPGs can be argued as hardcore games, as to truly excell and get everything out of them you need to be hardcore, but otherwise, no. Nintendo markets Metroid Prime, Brawl, etc as hardcore games and Wii Play as softcore. This is not true: Wii Play is accessable from people of a bigger demograph, but not necessarily people who play video games X amount.
It's all stupid marketing BS.
