Wow thanks for all the help guys! :P

Just a question though...I ran an ethernet cable to my router and the internet would not work...Is this because I haven't updated my MoBo ethernet drivers from CD?

Also if anyone has anymore advice about first steps and programs then just click the message button;)

Thanks so much!

Hey!

Yesterday I finished building my first computer and now I was wondering what are the essential first things I should do and programs I should get.

What I mean by this are for example Updating Drivers (Essential thing) and Temperature Monitoring (Essential programs;))

Lol thanks for any help :)

Don't get a lamptop for gaming.

But yes.

The laptop actually isn't for me. I currently own a i7 gaming computer. The laptop is for my brother as he is constantly traveling and has no use for a desktop at the moment. Thanks for the tip though ;)

Hey,

I was looking to buy a new laptop that could potentially last me around 3 years.

I was looking at the Alienware Area-51 m15x laptop. Is this a good laptop or not?

I am looking for something that will have a price around $2000 US.

Thanks for any help!

It's not too bad I guess, but a high price tag for not much difference in cooling compared to some cheaper coolers.

EDIT: And from what I've read around here and there, cooling really depends on on the thermal grease used, how you use it and if you're lapping it or not. ;)

Hey could you tell me exactly what lapping is? This is sort of my first build ;) Thanks!

Yah, like AzNs3nSaT1On said, it's really for experienced users, though you don't neccessarily have to be experienced. You can look up videos/tutorials and see how it's done, learn from that. I won't bother with lapping on my cooler unless it really needs it, but the one I'm getting isn't the ideal one for lapping anyway. It's more for extreme overclockers cause even a 4-5c temperature difference is a plus for them. I'd say there's no real need for it unless you plan on overclocking for just benchmarks or something. To each his/her own. ;)

Well I was planning on overclock my Core i7 920 to 3.8-4.0 GHz

I'll have a HAF 932 case and probably will get a Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme with an extra fan so I have two fans.

Will that be enough to overclock to 3.8 to 4.0 GHz?

Oh and I also have this ram: OCZ Gold 6gb http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227365&Tpk=OCZ3G1600LV6GK

Thanks!

Hey,

What do you all think about these two coolers?

I will be getting one of these two to cool my Core i7 920 as these are the best of the best from what I've seen.

So now that that it's down to these two, what do you think?

Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme-1366

I know MX-2 and arctic silver 5 are good ones, I think the MX-2 is a little better than AS5 though.

Lyron-Baktos
What do you think of IC Diamond 7 compared to MX-2? Thanks!

Hey,

I was just about to buy a Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme and I was wondering what's the best thermal compound I should get with it?

Thanks for your help!

Well the one for 920 is a bit more expensive... but beleive me, this is the best air cooler you can buy.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608007

AS5 was one of the best thermal paste, it's been surpass by other now, but it's still better then intel.

Bebi_vegeta

So is Artic Silver 5 used only for the CPU? And also I heard that trying to get off the thermal paste the Core i7 comes with messes it up or something?

Here's the quote: After having been misled by the NewEggers -- when my i7 arrived -- I scraped off the Shin-Etsu G751(I think this is the thermal paste it comes with) and cleaned it with 90% isopropyl using coffee filters (which probably damaged the surface). It was only later that I read an Intel doc for the i7 to learn about which compound they ship with. (search for 320837.pdf)

Shin-etsu is another very good thermal paste. It's not used by intel... well not that I have heard of, they usualy already apply paste on the heatsink. Some say shin-etsu is better then AS5.

So if the Core i7 920 already comes with Shin-Etsu G751 then I dont need to bother with thermal paste when putting on a heatsink...right?
