There are a couple of games I fell in love with way back when the family '98 was up and running. Namely, Kings Quest: Mask of Eternity, and, more importantly, Myst. I've struggled to find a solution to my problem. When run, Myst (Masterpiece Edition) will open to a black screen with your pointer functioning and the audio looping cavernous wind noise. It will let you go to the top bar and open the menu. I also managed to navigate in the dark and select the first linking book. So, the game is basically functioning, but the visuals are not.

I have tried running it in 95 and 98 compatibility mode. By default I have Vista running in XP compatibility mode. I have tried running it as Administrator. I have tried fiddling with options in Myst.exe properties. None of that worked.

Since, I have tried running DOSBox, but found it far too confusing and found no confirmation whether it could even run Myst or not. So, giving up that, I tried installing the official Windows Virtual PC Beta, making sure to go into the Boot Menu to enable virtualization first. That won't run, telling me my computer doesn't require the update. Afterwards I installed VirtualBox and created a '98 system. However, when run, it doesn't recognize I have a CD in my drive, and says there is no medium to boot from... something along those lines.

Any help would be so appreciated. I am sick to death of struggling with this infernal machine.

I thought it raised your Strength to 10, no matter what? I'm also not sure what you mean by "de-boost manually". Even if I get rid of them, how would I add them back? Editing my stats, I guess?

No one has recommended Mass Effect yet... I can't say I've played many of your games, but, understanding your preference for shooter-based combat, it might be up your alley. I enjoyed combat in Mass Effect less than the story and characters themselves, but it was nonetheless involving on harder difficulties with several strategic elements to consider for each battle.

I've used console a bunch in Oblivion and Fallout, however it doesn't seem to be working this time.

I picked a couple of perks I don't want anymore, and want to replace... specifically Intense Training x3. Problem is, when I give the command player.remove perk [Intense Training Code], it gets rid of all 3 at once in my perks menu, but doesn't actually effect my stats! I am finding it the same when I add perks... player.addperk [Nerd Rage Code], my stats remain the same though Nerd Rage! appears on my perks list. Also when I try to add.perk Intense Training it adds it to my perks list but doesn't give me the option to pick which stat to affect and ergo is as useless as my other attempts. I only have one or two texture and storage mods running so those shouldn't be a problem.

Anyone know how to go about doing what I want to do?

Zerg, because Terran are boring... if I have to play Terran I probably won't play (besides the plot). Protoss are pretty nifty, but not nearly as bad-ass as Zerg. xD

I've played both, love both, and totally disagree. Bioshock is a wonderful game that explores more specific depths than Mass Effect... but that's because it has a much smaller, totally contained environment. Without that deep exploration of plot and character, in that environment, the game would amount to nothing, at least nothing worthwhile. Also, you play the role of Jack... hence role-playing... the term "RPG" in video gaming, as a genre or as a term itself is a little hazier than other genres or terms. I would consider any game in which you take a somewhat preditermined role as a role playing game. In Mass Effect you are Shepard, in Fallout you are the Lone Wanderer, in Bioshock you are Jack. On some level these are all RPGs. They also have shooter elements as their basis, but that doesn't mean they're not RPGs too.

Mass Effect, by leaps and bounds. Oblivion has its merit only in the broad and often extravegant workings of a dedicated modding community - which sometimes adds some seriously needed depth to an otherwise dull game (think: throw-away characters, guild and plot extensions, etc). Fallout 3 is better than Oblivion in certain ways, but worse in others. I get tired of scavenging a wasteland after a couple of hours, though combat and plot are pretty good. Mass Effect tops them in all ways. At least, the PC version does. I've tried the X-BOX version, and uhg!.. talk about clunky inventory system.

Definitely Psychonauts! As for Prince of Persia.. to be honest I've been holding a silly grudge against it for quite a while.. they got all of Ubisofts advertising for the majority of their run, so Beyond Good and Evil, a most fantastic game, my favorite second only to Mass Effect, got the short end of the stick. No one knew about it, and it was supposed to be a trilogy. However, I can let go of that silliness now, since they're finally coming out with the second game. Now. For Prince of Persia, can I start in the middle, or would you recommend trying to find the games in order?

I'm only running about 10. It's nice, but you can only improve a game so much when it feels so flawed to begin with. I might actually get into it again.. though I decided to try out F.E.A.R first.

I figure, if you're using a controller, you might as well be playing on a console.
