For those who haven't heard... https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/uncharted-apos-nathan-drake-isn-090200515.html
Uncharted games do not feature a health meter, they feature a luck meter. Drake is not a bullet sponge, he just runs out of luck before someone pops his ass to the game over screen.
I actually think this is a pretty neat concept that should be explored more, and implemented with purpose, but what really caught me was Amy Hennig talking about it...
"As Amy Hennig, director of the first three Uncharted games explained: "True! That was the original intention (to stay more aligned with the spirit and tone of the films we were homaging.)"
Staying more aligned with the spirit and tone of the films we were homaging...
That sentence right there is why I worry about video games future and why I don't look at uncharted games in the same light as say Bayonetta or super meat boy... This is one of the top writers of one of the most successful developers (yes I know she is no longer with ND) admitting that their scope is to chase the aesthetics of a film.... Not for gameplay purposes or to better serve their player systems, but to align more with chasing the feeling of watching Indiana Jones...
Games are sooooooo much more than films when a smart developer is squarely focused on building aesthetics around air tight gameplay. Our hobby transcends film, TV, and all other forms because it is interactive and can be so much more to the human experience than simply a film...
I like devs that make a game first and a film last.
Another dissing into cinematic games.
Since when aiming for film aesthetics = no gameplay ? This nosense of "whatever looks like a movie = no gameplay " needs to stop someday, it got old. Uncharted has all kind of gameplay elements to make the game work as intended, that of a movie like. Personally i prefer to play a game like Uncharted 2 than watch 3 films together. Guess why .. because its far more than a movie as you sound. Period.
As for cinematic games in general, im so glad there are such type of engaging games that offer more than button smashing to get to next level and repeat, like intriquing stories, emotions and many more things youll never see in a game like Bayonetta because its other kind of experience. If you dont like them , dont play them. Dissing them makes you look like hater because those games are optional. Are not bad by any means, its just not for you.
Let them for people like me who like all kind of different experiences including cinematic games and you go play only Zelda and Bayonetta, Kart and Smash for "gameplay" only experiences. Problem solved.
Ps: Thank god not everyone in the industry following Nintendo steps because we would never have games like Uncharted 2 , Last of Us, God of War 4, Prophecy Indigo, MGS 1, Witcher 3, Resident Evil 7 and many many more games that had a blast with in the past. Now i cant wait for Spiderman that looks and plays better than a "movie" and ofcourse Cyberpunk 2077.
Should i mention red dead redemption 2 and that im eager to see what will GTA6 look like next-gen ? You people can shit your pants with mario kart 25 and smash 35 instead, pure great and different gameplay, problem solved ( oh wait, is actually gameplay any better than it was 20 years ago or its one of the same with few modes and additions left and right... hmm, i wonder ... what the gameplay only games have to offer that better when the core experience is exactly the same for 20 years now ? Better graphics and physics, frames and resolutions the biggest differences right ? Hmm, weird ha ? )
