Give the .hack// games a spin. The first .hack// series is four games long. Infection, Mutation, Outbreak, and Quarantine. The story continues through the four games, and they come separately. So it's like a four-disc game, but they are separate volumes. Each game comes with an anime DVD, .hack//Liminality, taking place at the same time as the events in the game you play. It's a great game, and it brings something new to the RPG world. The story takes place in the world's most advanced online game, and the game plays out as a simulated MMORPG. After the first four games, comes .hack//G.U., which is a three-part series in the same universe. Every time you finish a volume/part, you can transfer your data and all of your items, party members, levels, etc. to the next volume. G.U. is the newest one, and they currently have the second volume out. How long the game is depends on how hard you play it. There's SO much extra stuff you can do aside from the story. I'm not sure what Phantasy Star is like, but I'll throw this out there anyway.
I really recommend it. I think GameSpot has totally underrated it though, so I would try it yourself before trusting GameSpot's view on it. I'm not the only one who thinks so either. There's no telling whether someone will like it or not (I even got someone into it who wasn't into RPGs), but who knows. You might just like it :)
