With the recent rumors of Microsoft and Sony both having protection against used games, I've noticed a lot of people saying that it's the console maker's fault.

It's not. Think about it.

This is clearly a push from larger companies and their shareholders like EA, Ubisoft, Activision and Take Two. Microsoft and Sony's in house studios just play such a little piece of the pie they are almost irrelevant. The publishers have both companies held hostage at this point. If EA calls Microsoft and requests that they put some form of protection against a game, the only thing they have to say is "Well, Sony's doing it." and that converstaion is as good as over. The same would happen if Activision called Sony and said "Microsoft's doing it".

Really, what choices do both companies have? They can't lose their biggest publishers to their rival and I'm sure Microsoft remembers how badly it hurt that EA didn't want to support Live for the longest time. I'm sure Sony recalls how much it hurt to be a year late to market in the last generation as well. Let's face it. Both of the next gen consoles will probably be out within a month or two of one another. Both will probably have close to similiar specs. Both will probably maintain their loyal fanbases while other people will just buy both of them. Both will probably have a ton of similar features.

In the end, the only hope is that the retailers can somehow convince the publishers that they'll get a piece of the pie in used game sales. At this point though, I wouldn't hold your breath.

I really was OK with the online pass. I completely understand the concept of the publishers not wanting to lose money on used games. I'm completely OK with giving extra features to people who preorder or purchase the game new. I think honestly this lockdown (if it occurs) might be the last straw with me. I might as well just buy games on PC because they typically go on sale much earlier than their console counterparts and I don't have any tangible value with console games if I can't sell them. I really hope this will end up just being something thrown around an never materialize, but I'm curious of what your stands are on it. Are you going to buy your console of choice even if this restriction is there? Are you going to switch to a different platform? Are you going to start collecting stamps and coins instead?

HD-DVD's failure is the result of one thing: the lack of a affordable player in an appropriate amount of time.

While Sony's basically planted the trojan horse in PS3, Toshiba never had that luxery. If Toshiba would have allowed more manufacturers to produce players at a $99 price point, the format war would be far from over. Whether that was feasible or not, only Toshiba knows.

HD-DVD was a very well thought out format from the get go with firmware updates to support future features. People who had purchased first generation Blu Ray players will be left out in the cold when new Blu Ray features appear (minus PS3 owners).

I currently have a Samsung UP5000 combo player. Now I can cash in on the clearance HD DVD movies, while still enjoying my Blu Rays. Only problem, no telling whether the player is going to support Blu Ray Interactive (it has the ability to be updated), but I'm still happy with the purchase.

Hey, I respect Microsoft and the 360, but I want a game library that isn't 75% 3rd person-or first person-shooters, so I bought a PS3VERS1ON

Your sig is hilarious, especially because all the games in your collection are available on 360 (except VF5, which will be).

Microsoft's already said they'll make a Blu Ray add on if HDDVD fails

You should try reading the whole thread.  I realize this could be obtained at EB, but if someone wants a new copy (rather than the beaters without instructions/cases that they usually carry), this wouuld be an answer.

http://www.inetvideo.com/games/detail.cfm?gameid=02-006162

Comes out to around $12 with shipping.  Bought mine last week..quick shipping.   Just figured I'd give people the heads up since it just went on the 360 BC list.

All of the copies my local EB's had were shot.

Cheating to me IS a big deal because it takes away from the fun of the game. I don't have but a few hours a week to play video games. Therefore, I want to have a good experience while doing it. As for someone's comment about it being closed, so is Steam. Steam you lose you're account permanently (online) if you're caught hacking. Problem is that everyone still does it. Oh, and anyone who says they can beat me joypad vs. mouse/keyboard is crazy. Go try playing Counter Strike on PC with a 360 joypad...or unreal...or anything else for that matter.

Well, with Achievements coming to PC, there's more of a "incentive" to hack. (The same reason why so many people glitch in GoW). I won't buy any cross-platform games. Remember how Steam (Counter Strike) was suppose to be "hack proof". It was hacked in less than 2 weeks. I promise there will be a firestorm when this all starts.

Your connection is fine. Just don't host any games.
