this doesn't look so bad to me, and it's not bullshot, you can see the jaggies.

aia89

Why is the screenshot so small?

That usually makes games look better than they really are.

Not that I am saying Gears 3 looks bad because it doesn't.

Comparing games with high geometry...

ronvalencia

Which wasn't really the whole argument.

I used the poly count on a nanosuit as an example to show that certain effects can make even a low poly model look really good.

That Uncharted 2 cutscenes used such effects to make the scenes look much better than actual gameplay even without touching the assets.

Shaders still consumes compute resource.

As for geometry comparisons

Resident Evil 5, "frame is comprised of between three and four million polygons". Refer to http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/face-off-resident-evil-5-article

Uncharted 2 has up to 1.2 million triangle count per frame. Refer to http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/uncharted-2-mastering-the-cell-blog-entry

We are not even comparing the above games with Aliens vs Predator PC DirectX 11.

ronvalencia

Yes I know shaders consume a lot of resources my point was only to show how the cutscenes of UC2 looked much better than gameplay and that was because of the additional effects they added.

I used shaders from Crysis as an example to show that even with low poly models they can look much better than higher poly models with some added shaders.

Not sure why you brought up the other stuff.

Yes, but that chart plots out the resolving power of the eye vs. the swept arc of a single pixel. That extra million pixels isn't going to make a difference if you're not sitting close enough (or using a large enough display) for your eye to actually discern them.

For instance, in my living room, I have a 55" 1080p set and the TV is about 8-9' away (which means my head is more like 10-11' away, accounting for the seat of the couch). That means, somewhere between 720p and 1080p, I'm no longer going to be able to see those additional pixels, no matter how many of them you try to cram onto the display.

Now, my monitor is going to be a different story; I have a 22" and I sit about 2' away from it, so I'd be able to make out somewhere between 1080p and 1440p (my monitor is 1080p). So, I would see the extra detail in that case, but at the cost of no longer being on my couch in the living room. Others will disagree, but that's not a good tradeoff in my opinion.

I must be super human then because last time I was at my friend's place I compared Mass Effect 2 720P and 1080P and I noticed a huge difference sitting more than 10 feet back from my friend's 47 inch tv. Even he was amazed at the difference.

[QUOTE="SAGE_OF_FIRE"]

It looks the same just with a lot more detail added.

edidili

This is the face I've seen in the videos and no he doesn't look like Geralt. The white hair and the scar were the only same features. No wonder peoples **** about it. When you make a sequel you do not make the main protagonist look like a whole different person.

Here is how Geralt looks in game now.

[QUOTE="Maroxad"]

I just found a review for Witcher 2. By PCFormat. (sorry if already posted)

The Good: Involving Combat, Stupendous Visuals, Varied Gaming
The Bad: Awkward Pathfinding

Score 92. AAA

"If the bugs are stamped out, we got a new king of role-playing to doff our caps to. The Witcher 2 is vast, varied and challenging."

Hmm, The Witcher 2: Enhanced Edition coming up?

SAGE_OF_FIRE

It's only a review for the first chapter of the game.

And it's on a preview build which is an old version.

Even when the game is only months away the preview build is much older.

I think games like Fallout 3, Oblivion, Red Dead and Mass Effect to name a few are better examples of what has been improved on the technical level this gen. Much more than just eye candy.tomarlyn

I think it's more to do with devs better utilizing their assets.

Skyrim looks a lot better than vanilla Oblivion but it's not really better technically it just has a better art style.

Yes, I see what you mean with that chart, but the picture will always be clearer at a higher res and while I do agree about the certain kind of TV, I game on a monitor for consoles, so that doesn't really affect me when it comes to not using a TV.

mitu123

Yah I think he forgets that a million or more extra pixels on the screen allows for more detail.

Characters and objects far awayin game will look blurry on 720P and on 1080P or even 1680x1050 it looks a lot cleaner and easier to notice.

At least the PS2 could handle most multiplats and there wasn't a generation of difference between them like this time.tomarlyn

Well yah but you have to take into account that a lot of the features from this gen are more to do with hardware stressing shader techiniques and post processing.

Last gen it wasn't like that as much. Heck back then people were amazed just to see shadow coverage like in Splinter Cell games.

The PS2 was still far behind it's counterparts though and this was easily noticed in the multiplat games.
