Say what you will, but the ball wasn't in Nintendo's court this year
It was Sony who came into this with a bleak outlook. It was Sony who needed to show something that would prove they were still going to be a player. And even though they showed many game clips, they did not show anything new to change that position.
We know Nintendo is safe financially, and we know they have big 1st party games behind doors, and we know 3rd parties are going to follow the sales. Wii Sports Resort/Wii Motion Plus, is going to be the biggest seller next year, and it was a totally fresh and new announcement.
And despite what transpired this E3, it's Sony and their fans who are going to be hurting come a year from now.
