I'm a pretty big fan of horror movies. I've gotten sick of slasher films and anything where its pretty much just a pretty girl running from a psycho guy. These just seem to be the same movie over and over but in different settings.
Lately I was pretty excited to see some horror-comedies come out (Shawn of the Dead, Slither, Severence, Black Sheep) but I've kinda just been hoping for something to at least seriously try to be scary again.
What in the last 10 years that we haven't ripped off from Asian Cinema would you call a classic? There's a couple in there. 28 days later - I thought was great. It was unique for a zombie film at the time, it was eerie, and I love the music - its perfect for the movie.
Now it seems like the movies that even break the plane of mediocre get great reviews. Its like the critics have just given up on the genre and I think alot of them have. They pretty much figure if you're into this, you probably don't care much about plot or substance or anything besides a little gore.
I would say The Host was probably the best creature-feature movie I've seen in a long time and probably the most realistic-looking monster I've ever seen in a movie.
But where are our original horror movies? Somebody in the Hollywood scene must be writing something decent. Do they not think we're interested in well-thought-out horror movies anymore?
Back in the day in American cinema, horror film plot lines where just as set up as any other movies, they where just meant to be scary also. Not that they where either of the two in all cases, but I watched a movie called 'Horror Express' the other night and that had more effect on me than anything I've seen thats come out in the last 10 years. That movie was about 35 years old I think but had the old-school horror movie actors in it. Good Show.
Give me more Hollywood!
I don't know that anyone really sees these blogs - especially since I'm pretty knew here - but does anyone feel the same or am I just saying something incredibly obvious.
