I would say it's the disc, does it freeze during any other games? Try cleaning the disc and trying it again. I've been playing Turok for 2 days and it hasn't froze on me (yet).
Unchartered: Drake's Fortune is a lot more comparible to Gears Of War. The controls are the same and the story is just set in a different time and atmosphere.
