Great article-- I'd love to see more pieces like this. Point number three deserves a space all it's own. It really does seem like the game industry has gone stagnant over the last 10 years, with every studio simply copying the biggest title in it's genre. Games producers are behaving like movie studios, creating huge-budget blockbusters that are completely devoid of originality, and apparently built around some sort of industry template. When I saw the promotional video for the upcoming X-COM game the other day, I actually got excited, remembering how fun the original was, and how, when it was first released, every game on the market was distinctly different.
I want a mod that removes all the candles from caves not occupied by humans, and turns the ambient lighting down to zero. It'd be scary to explore caves with a torch-- especially if they have things like Falmer in them.
