I've been reading about the 680 this morning and one the things that popped out to me was that someone said its close to as powerful as 3 580's. (Their words not mine.) So with that in mind I'd imagine you'd need a top of the line CPU. Anybody have any idea of an AMD or Intel example?

Have you tried using some other type of output port like if you don't have a soundcard maybe out of your motherboard optically?

How much do you think it would really cost to build a PC on par with the most optimistic spec'd next gen console. Because along with next gen consoles, we're getting new GPU's and CPU's that will drive down prices of older hardware. And we all know they're not gonna throw a 580 or 6970 in the next system especially looking at the economy and Sony's losses.

Mods i.e. icehancer, frame rate, graphical advantage, exclusive technologies i.e. Physx, and customizable recoupable hardware. These are just a "few" reasons I just jumped off the console bandwagon. And I don't believe any of those reasons are going anywhere soon. Sony, MS, and Nintendo are all showing signs that they're straying away from giant leaps in technological advancement. If I'm right about the next GEN consoles my PC if at all won't be to far behind to warrent a $1000 upgrade. PC's may cost more to build (in the beginning) but, if you have the funds the advantages are well worth it when factoring in all the above listed reasons. And in my opinion an argument against that is like saying "I buy all my games for the Wii because, PS3 and XBOX 360 don't look or play much better and its cheaper."

What does stock mean? Because if you built it it's not stock in the same sense of a car.

[QUOTE="Postmortem123"]

That CPU is insanely old, so I'm not sure it would be worth upgrading.

Well thats what I thought as well, but as far as I'm aware, I'm not gonna get a PC that can run most new games on high smoothly for 500-600 bucks. I'm right about that arn't I?

I'm not gonna pretend like I know as much as some others on the forums. But I think that if you salvaged what ever parts you could like the disc drive, hard drive, and possibly the PSU. You could probably build something that could run most games (console ports) on high at playable frame rates especially if you use used parts. And you could sell the rest of your current parts on ebay to widen your budget. I built my rig last August starting out with 600-700 dollars and just from upgrading parts here and there it's gotten a lot lot more powerful.

I hope that at least 2gb Vram is a standard for the new Nvidia cards.
