Since this hasn't been added to the main list, feel free to put this one up.

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies

Dragon Quest 9 screenshot

Good Points:

  • A champion in art design
  • Plenty of customisation options and gameplay depth
  • Metal Slimes ensure level-grinding is painless
  • Varied sidequests at every turn
  • Surprisingly emotional story with meaningful characters

Bad Points:

  • Your support character may get on your nerves slightly
  • You may have a thing against turn-based combat

Kirby's Power Paintbrush is apparently supposed to be the best in the series, even though the controls were bordering on unplayable.

Is there any game that's come out this year that's perhaps been overly pushed by the devs and become a massive talking point among us when you really think it just wasn't that special? Preferebly not just the bad ones that went by unnoticed.

For me, it has to be Sonic the Hedgehog 4. Let's face it, it's an unjustifiably pricey downloadable game with little in the way of original level design. I would say Final Fantasy 13 or Red Dead Redemption, but even they have their standout points.

I just found that one awkward to control with very uninspired level design.

I'm not sure how much better Majora's Mask looks with the expansion than Ocarina does without. Surely that just makes the whole thing redundant.

nintendo 64...

psx could never do SM64, Wave Race, or OOT...

Scoob64

In that case, let's compare a PS1 game to an N64 game from the same year and see who was ahead.

On the left, a level from Crash Bandicoot, and on the right, a level from Super Mario 64:

A level from Crash BandicootBob-bomb battlefield from Super Mario 64

As you can see, Crash bandicoots envrionments have more of a curve to them and there's quite a lot of scenery, extra details and decent shading, while Mario 64 is just flat surfaces(admittedly, flat surfaces that play better, but we're not talking about that).

Please let them release Dragon Quest 10 this decade! I've only just gotten into the series but I think I speak for a lot of the fanbase when I say that two years is a reasonable wait for a next installment.
