The Tony Hawk franchise was one of my favorite franchises, it was also one of the biggest thing going on in video games in the late 90's and early 2000's. The latest game, Tony Hawk Shred, has bombed, only 3000 units were sold in its first week, and most critics are not even considering to review that game.

There hasn't been a game where I gave the same level of obsession after THPS 3.
Some people have said that the formula grew tiresome, but what those people keep neglecting is that the franchise is own by Activision, the same company that treats their franchises like live-stock by milking them every year until people don't care anymore all thanks to the direction that's lead by Bobby Kotick; prime example: Guitar Hero, the appeal is not what it once was and the sells are deteriorating. Also, people suspect that Call of Duty will head in the same direction as Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero.
The games after Tony Hawk Underground, were essentially the same game. The features like create a skater and park editor are almost the same, the only difference with them is that NeverSoft took out all of the objects that you can use for your skater or park and replace them with new ones. And they also have flaws and limitations, other games did those features much better than the Tony Hawk games, heck, the graffiti editor was done much better in Jet Set Radio Future than in Tony Hawk Underground 2; and of course, NeverSoft never improved those features, game after game.
I would like to see the series return to its original form, but introduce a few twist here and there at least. Just make the game much better than the previous installments. Using a plastic skate board to play the game was just a stupid idea and a waste of two years of development time. Taken the original formula and throwing it out the window was never the answer, it was just the fact that there has been so many of the same games that was released year after year.
There is the Skate series. Skate is a good series, but it's not at all that much better than Tony Hawk. The success of the Skate franchise was just good timing. Games like Thrasher: Skate and Destroy, and Grind Session, two skate boarding games that came out when Tony Hawk's Pro Skaters made its way onto the scene and became a phenomenon, got lost in the shuffle. I have a feeling that Skate could have got lost in the shuffle as well if it debut when Tony Hawk was in solid form. The people that are now playing Skate are probably not playing it in the same obsessive way that they played Tony Hawk, like I said, Tony Hawk Pro Skaters 1 - 3 was a phenomenon.
