Space Opera in the Vein of James S.A. Corey's "The Expanse" or Alistair Reynold's Space Opera "Revelation Space". These are the some of the very best in the genre and make very compelling backgrounds for a video game. The Expanse deals with a lot of the political intrigue between the governments of Earth, Mars,and the Asteroid Colonies. Revelation Space deals a lot more with aliens wiping out the galaxy ala Mass Effect and vast separations in time among usually 3 major arcs in each novel.
