Mario of course gets the recognition. But to me, Street Fighter started a new age revolution of sheer one on one competition, not just high scoring but straight up competing against someone else directly. What other game had such a draw back in the 90's, still being played in tournaments to this day and....single handedly gave the victory to the SNES over the Genesis thanks to it's mere existence for that system alone...?

I love Tekken. Been a fan since the "sleeper hit" on the PS1 and been growing with it ever since. To me, it is the best 3-D fighter (hand to hand that is) because it walks the fine line of being able to pick up and get into it without alienating players with complicated controls (see VF) and hardcore and challenging enough for you to want and need to learn more about it. Also the various martial arts on display are very very good and one can find the flow of the match quite exciting to be in and even more intoxicating to watch. My favorite characters are Jin, D. Jin, King, Bryan, Paul, Lei and Kazuya. With H. Mention going to Law, Heihachi, Feng Wei and Nina. Tekken will always rock...next to SF that is!!! Gotta pay respects to the franchise that put fighters on the map you know.....

Well, I never played the GG series but I heard it's pretty good. If SNK is your sweet spot, there's Fatal Fury Battle Archives (FF 1, 2 and 3), and Art of Fighting Anthology. Me personally, here's a few you cannot do without:

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (if you're lucky to get one)

SF Anniversary Collection (3rd Strike alone is worth it, and you get SSF2T Hyper Edition and the movie as a bonus)

Capcom vs. SNK 2 (great game and characters)

SF Alpha Anthology (all Alphas in one box)

Honorable mention: Midway Arcade Treasures (strictly for MK2 and MK3 alone if nothing else)
