I'm using a 1440 x 900 monitor and a 4870 graphics card. I notice the card has 2 DVI outlets, and right now I am using a DVI to VGA converter so I can use my VGA cable to connect my monitor to my computer. I also have a DVI cable around here somewhere, but I'm too lazy to hunt it down. My monitor does have a DVI outlet, so I know I could use my DVI cable if I really wanted to.

Is there any difference when using a VGA cable (with DVI adapter so it can go into the 4870's outlet) or a DVI cable (with no adapter)? I would guess that there is no difference, but I could be wrong. Anyone know for sure?

Well yeh, vista is only good for 64 bit support, but hey, xp has 64 bit support too! and its more stable and doesnt eat more than half a gig of memory!! Also for me, half the games I play are dx9, the other half are all new ones like ut3, bf2, crysis, bioshock, etc.

Dx10 is just to help sell vista.

Crysis is a blatent lie, how dx9 (with texture hack) cannot possibly run dx10 graphics. That whole thing is enough to prove how dx10 doesn't offer any meaningful advantage. Look at any other game, and dx10 offers the same preformance at virtually the same exact graphics. Just wait for windows 7 before you get any new OS. Dx10 has proven absolutly nothing, except that its a luring marketing device.

[QUOTE="rob1101"]You will be able to skp vista. Games will support XP well into windows 7 i think.furionpride

Yeah, just wait for windows 7.

Yay! thanks for confirming it guys! I knew it was best to avoid vista for now.

Do you guys seriously think that in todays games, dx10 systems have a huge advantage over dx9 systems? I mean, dx10 has somewhat more blended particle effects (rarely noticable), but that's it really. Dx10 and dx9 crysis, with same settings, running both at identical very high settings, XP preforms best (not noticably though, maybe by 2 or 3 frames more). If you disagree, find proof, because I do... right here. And please don't give me that BS that dx9 (very high hack) and dx10 crysis look different.

The only time you need to go to Vista is when you cant play or use programs you want to on them because they arent supported for XP. which wont happen for at least another two years.04dcarraher

Ok awesome! And by the dx10 will have a noticable advantage over dx9! I'll stick with XP for now and upgrade to vista in 2 years. BUT, vista might be replaced by windows 7 in 2 years. Yet all windows 7 is is the fixed version of vista, just with less errors. (like XP was the fixed version for windows ME)

You need to have Windows Vista 64bit for a good Gaming rig. DirectX10 changes games more than you think.AmpedFear

Can you answer my question, or are you going to try to sell vista to me? Plus, there is no difference in crysis in dx9 and d10 shown here. And here it shows that in bioshock, there is no preformance difference overall.

Anyone know the answer to my question in the origionl post?!

Starting off fresh should fix the problem.AmpedFear

He can't if he doesnt have the software. If he bought it from dell, they wouldn't give him the vista CD and key. XP X64 is good for new systems, but not older ones. Xp is more stable than vista, overall. Vista's security is also wayyy too paranoid and annoying.

Get an antec 900 for a case, and a Xigmatek 1283 for a CPU cooler. Other than that its great!

Hello, I currently have a gaming rig with a 3.2 ghz dual processor, 4 gigs of ram, and a 280gtx video card.

My OS is windows XP x64. I don't want to upgrade to vista because I don't want to lay out that money for a flashy interface and barely better graphics in games.

I'm wondering when will newly released games stop running for XP and only work on Vista. I don't want to change my OS until windows 7 arrives in late 2009 or early 2010.
