Just how big is Xenoblade X's world anyway?

Also, what exactly is the game's relation to the orignal? I assume it's not a direct sequel since there's a Xenoblade 2 on the horizon. Just wondering since I have no cheap way to play the original, and I want to give X a try.

@jumpaction: Yeah I'm still on my first playthrough as well.

I actually just got Link's classic tunic by beating all of the shrines. Now all I have to do is beat the divine beast on Death mountain and I'll be ready.
