Because Sony hating is (was) at an all time high, and MS can capitalize on it by making massive amounts of lemmings buy into the "Jump in" community. Over time the differences have narrowed to the point that paying for Live is the biggest rip off the gaming world has seen since gaming gloves. I think they should've just called the fee a "club membership" give the participants cool bennys likemaps and ranking perks but let people still play free-online as the games were meant to be played.

I like the way Sony does it with Home and Qore. If your that much of a cow to spend your time and money in a fart around vitual world, they'll be glad to take your money (although Home is basically free of charge also). But the games are still free to play online.

This is just silly and milking the loyalist for no good reason should they do this. You can buy a Blu Ray player for under $150 currently. By Christmas we will probably seeBR players at $99.If any 360 lemmings fall for this rather than just getting a PS3 then you really need your head checked.

There is no arguement that PS3 is the best bang for your dollar, but if you need to play online go with what your friends are doing. Or be a trend setter, happy buying.
