I didn't read the article, so I am not sure if they addressed this or not, but WHY would it need to sell 1 million on day 1 just to make money? Wouldn't selling a million over a week STILL be a million sold? WTF?

The game doesn't have to break records, it just has to sell a lotBgrngod

There is a general pattern to how media sells over time. I don't know what it is but then I'm not paid too while the guy who was quoted is. He's saying that, based on how game sales typicall diminish over time they would need opening day totals over a million units in order to be profitable over the expected sales life of the product.

Regardless of score, I'm about 5 hours in & so far it's fantastic. The review wasn't wrong about the graphical glitches, it wasn't wrong about the elevators, and it wasn't wrong about the inventory system...it was just wrong to suggest you'll CARE when everything else is so awesome :)

[QUOTE="Verge_6"][QUOTE="manningbowl135"]to why it fails at a rate of 33%.

33%

33%

Can I see a link please? And not a link that has an eb employee and one sydney retailer confirming the numbers.

Burnout_Player0

You know as well as I do that the Sony fans can't provide ANYTHING to back those two up. They'll go and spout it repeatedly, but when ONE person asks for how they got those numbers and proof to back it up, they vanish. Such is the Sony fan way, it seems.

:o you think they made it up? no way
but then again they're cows

They made up a reason to buy a games console with no games ;) Link it or it didn't happen!

33% 1 out of 3 Xbox 360s die within a few months, and most of them after the warranty expieres. Time to call the FCC. 10 million Xbox 360s need to be recalled and destroyed.DarthaPerkinjan

Amazing isn't it. The OP knows the sytem failure rate and knows how many will have failed before the warranty is up even though the warranty isn't up yet on any xbox that has ever shipped...at least not for the kinds of issues caused by the manufacturing defects that seem to concern the OP. Some crystal ball he has there!

Yes it does. The difference between analog and digital isnight and day. If you have an HDTV (which I do)--it is imperative to have HDMI.HuhJustaBox

Completely and utterly false. HDMI provides a great picture. Component provides an equally great picture. The difference is that component cables that are as good as a $10-20 hdmi cable cost quite a bit more. There is a difference in cost but not in attainable quality.

Selling below cost to drive out the competition and raise prices?  That is easily debatable.  I will also point you towards their new practice of charging more for 360 games than the exact same game for PC.  What was their defense?  People will pay it so it's okay to do it.Rosencrantz

Sony does it too.  Both companies changed their licensing fees and standard MSRP to more quickly recoup their R&D invenstment in the hardware I assume.

I disagree with all of your reasons and I hate MS.  If you need a reason for why the Xbox/360 will damage the industry, it is because MS is willing to lose billions just to gain marketshare.  They are the only company capable of doing this without worrying about harming the company as a whole.  We saw this with the original Xbox.

In any other field this would be considered "dumping" or anti-competitive practices.  But since MS has enough money to be considered above the law, they can get away with the capitalism equivalent of murder.  This tactic is not
"competition" and it certainly isn't a fair practice.  It destabilizes the market and forces other companies to either leave that market (arguably the Wii) or to stoop to their level and risk unsustainability in the market and massive losses (Sony).Rosencrantz

It's only illegal dumping if they are selling below cost in order to drive out competition so they can then raise prices.  That doesn't appear to be the case.  They are selling hardware below cost at the launch of the console but that is a fairly common industry practice for games consoles and certainly not one invented by MS.

Apple Macintosh, is a better all-round system, ofcourse Microsoft grabbed the gaming industry (like theyre doing now to consoles) and now, to screw us over have made VISTA ... a complete MACINTOSH OPERATING SYSTEM 10 rip off or close enough at least, make matters worse its worse for gaming yet theyre forcing us to switch.

Good enough example?Meu2k7

If the mac were a better system it would be growing in market share, not decreasing.  It clearly fails to address some need of the majority of the PC buying audience which causes them to buy other products.  I'm not even going to argue about what that may or may not be as it doesn't matter.

You aren't being forced to do anything.  MS isn't doing a darn thing to the gaming market that the market doesn't want.  They can't, that's the way markets work.
