I played the demo a little bit, so maybe I can give a little more information about the game to UK Vita owners.
On its own, I guess the game kind of feels like some of the older NES top-down shooters of that time. And GTA. It also has a cover mechanic, which works out just fine in an 8-bit game.
You have a bunch of different weapons at your disposal - a pistol, a machine gun, a baseball bat... I forget what else. And I'm sure you come across other weapons later on. You can drive around in vehicles, but I never really checked to see if you could drive ALL of them. And I don't know if buildings are destructible at all, but they didn't appear to be.
You collect different aethstetic changes from people you kill, but I don't know how these impact the game yet, since I never looked into it when I was playing the demo.
So far none of the parodies really impacted the gameplay, though I know other ones probably will later in the game. There's one part where you have to cross a street and a bunch of school busses are driving by really fast, so your gang's ringleader (who is also a parody of the Joker), gives you some bionic boots so you can cross the street really fast and not end up dead like Frogger. In another scene you walk through the sewers and the game is sidescrolling for a few minutes.
But from what I can tell, first and foremost, the game is a top-down shooter.

Nice overview sounds interesting and I miss the nostalgia of playing this kind of games
