Him developing Super Mario Bros. was a key moment that allowed the videogame industry to resurrect after the videogame crash of 1983. For that reason, I like to think of him as a pioneer and a genius. I really wonder where we'd be videogame-wise if it weren't for him...
How ironic. I too was looking for that game's review. I'm surprised they haven't gotten to it yet. Strangely, although there seems to be mixed feelings about the game, a majority of board users describe the battle system as a "lot of fun" and "one of the best ever". That was enough for me to pick it up two days ago (but I haven't gotten to playing it yet).
Alien using no weapons? You might be talking about Lux. He's one of the 7 playable characters you can use in 7th saga (SNES). Maybe that's the game you're after?
Graphics do play a role, but I find sound and music to play an even bigger one. Take Koudelka for instance, some cutscenes in that game can chill your bones. Gory can be scary, but I find the moody atmosphere the game offers to be more scary.
I say it's a question of timing and laziness. For instance, although I do enjoy playing games with friends, I often have to work it out so that we can both be online at the same time, or I have to go to their place or they come over to mine. It makes it a little complicated at times. And I get lazy... I think part of the issue is playing online with friends to me is different than playing at home with friends. I don't really know how it goes nowadays but back in my day, we'd be like 4-5 to gather at a friend's place to play games. Miss those good old days.
The only game I can think of is Arcana (SNES). You have these cards (they are like magical sprites or something) and for some reason, I vaguely remember their hp and mp being intertwined. I could be wrong though.
