Once I find a reviewer that thinks like me about certain games, I find their impressions pretty accurate about how I will feel about games they reviewed I have yet to play. It is pretty hard to evaluate a game because it's difficult to remain objective. Like your topic suggest, reviews show certain trends. The same can be said about movie reviews, math books, politics (I had an urge to put this one here hehehe)... They all talk about the same thing, but in a different wording.
I can't think of any other 2-player RPGs other than the ones mentioned. Champions of Norrath, Gauntlet and Dark Alliance games came to mind too. Note they are in fact Action RPGs. Hunter: the Reckoning Wayward is another one that comes to mind. Considered a beat-em up game, but it's got RPG elements (such as exp to gain). The same could be said about the Lord of the Rings games. *shrug*
If you're looking for a beginner-like RPG (as your topic title suggests), you might want to take a look into Okage. I've never played it, but I remember reading reviews stating the game is a good beginner RPG.
I have never sold any of my consoles but I have however sold a few games. The games I probably regret selling most are Diablo (PC) and Diablo II (PC). I sold them for 20$ and decided to purchase them again for 40$ less than a year later... So, yeah, foolish move on my part.
