Random book review

THE HISTORY BUFF'S GUIDE TO WORLD WAR II By Thomas R. Flagel 376 Pgs, 6-in x 9-in, Illustrated, Paperback. ISBN:l-58182-442-4 $16.95. Cumberland House Publishing; 615-832-1171; www.cumberlandhouse.com

If you like easy-reading, pick-'em up and put-'em downers regarding the interesting trivia and substance of WWII, Tom Flagel's The History Buffs Guide to World War II is a must. It's amazing that a topic which has seen so much intense analysis, scrutiny and introspection after more than 60-year's examination can still yield books as cleverly conceived and written as this Buffs Guide. In it, Flagler repeats the format (and success) of his earlier The History Buffs Guide to the Civil War by breaking down significant aspects of the conflict both in regards to its principal antagonists and the deeds they perpetrated which resulted in the loss of 60-million lives in the deadliest conflict in human civilization.

Flagel's review encompasses every major battle and many that are lesser known but which had a definite bearing on the war's outcome. He points out many common misunderstandings and misconceptions while, at the same time, making us appreciate how such worldwide barbarity gave rise to some of the greatest acts of courage and sacrifice. By arranging his chapters by theme, rather than in chronological order, Flagel creates informative comparisons and unique views of such matters as the war's best commanders, worst mistakes, most decisive battles and heroes who were sometimes more than a little enigmatic. Hounding out his fascinating treatise, he recommends much that is related to the war including visiting historic sites, other books of interest, genealogy and war film studies.

The History Buffs Guide to WW2

ok that was some random review of this book i just finished reading. its a good book(unless im just an obsessed freak:oops: ) but its got a lot of stuff in it, includiong information about a museum in Ste. Mere-Eglise , France devoted to the actions of the 82nd and 101st airbone divisions in Normandy.

Idea

i wanna visit Auschwitz and Normandy and the Ardennes forest and the remnants of Camp Taccoa, well hell, i wanna visit everywhere but there was a thing in a book i read, said joining WW2 round tables was a good idea to get involved or wutever, well i came up with a better idea. im probly gunna sound weirdish but i wanna just start a group of enthusiasts like myself and just go everywhere i can with as little tour guides as i can. besides, ive always wanted to leave America and go elsewhere for a while, this would be a great way to do it, i just dont know how i would get ppl to come with me once im able to leave.

anyone who thinks its a good idea say yes. if u thinks im nuts, say holy sh*t your nuts(which i am)

i already posted this in a BOB forum but ill post it again here cuz i got nothin else to do

Bastogne (( episode 6 Band of Brothers ))

Bastogne is the defense of the fron line in the Ardennes forest, Belgium. Hitler had just launched his last counter-offensive, which he planned to trap the men in the forest during the coldest part of the year. The weather conditions, needless to say, were horrible. It was the worst winter the Ardennes had seen for 200 years. The 101st and 82nd Airborne divisions were sent in to plug the gap in the lines.

The episode starts with Doc Roe trying to find his way to 3rd battalion to get medical supplies. He lost his way and came across many dead American soldiers. When he is comin gback to easys positions, he sees Winters and is going to ask if he has anything to spare from his aid kit, but Winters tells him to crouch down because he heard something coming from a little behind his foxhole. Winters and Roe carefully go towards the noise, and see that it is a German soldier that has wandered past American lins to go to the bathroom. They take him as a prisoner. General McAuliff comes to check on how things are going. Winters and Strayer tell him that the line is spread to thin, and Germans keep wandering unnoticed past our lines. He tells them to hold the line. All they can do, because they are surrounded and no more men or supplies can come in to aid the men already in the Ardennes. Throughout the episode, they show Doc Roe scrounging for morphine and other medical supplies, and fixing up the wounded men to bring them back to the aid station. During his first time at the aid station, he is astonished and cant believe the men in there werent evacuated, because they are badly wounded. He soon learns from another medic that they are surrounded and cant be evacuated. He goes back over to "Skinny" Sisk, the wounded man that he brought in, to tell the nurse what is wrong with him. He then asks her for supplies, which she can give him very little of. As they are going out of the aid station, they tell each other where they are from, speaking in Frech. this is the begining of their friendship, and you get the idea that they have a thing for each other. As he is leaving, Nurse Renee gives hima chocolate bar.

Coming back to the company, he sees that they are having a religious servive, because there is set to be a patrol. He goes to Seargent Martin, who is leading the patrol, but Martin doesnt want him to come, because it is a combat patrol and doesnt want Doc to get hurt. Doc Roe sits against a tree near where the men were going for their patrol, waiting for news of what is going on, and for the men to come back so if there are wounded men, he can dress their wounds and get them to an aid station.

Farther into the episode, the Germans try to break through our lines. They had tanks and tons of infantry. Our men on the front lines hold them back. Walter Gordon gets shot through the shoulder by a sniper in a tree (( doesnt say that in movie just the book )). Doc Roe bandages him and gets him away from the line to a jeep, with the help of Seargent Lipton. The next, and last time he visits the aid station is when Lieutanant Welsh gets hit with a mortar shell in the leg. When They get to the aid station, it is being bombed, and Doc Roe soon finds out that Nurse Renee is dead. When he comes back from the aid station, he bandages heffrons hand, reluctantly with the head scarf nurse Renee wore before she died.

Crossroads ((episode 5 Band of Brothers))

Crossroads shows the men in Holland. There is a particular  crossroads where the main road crosses a dike, with a road on it. People kept getting wounded at these crossroads. Soon, easy was sent on a patrol to the crossroads, to see what was going on and try to push back the Germans. The patrol starts at night. Winters tells the men to take cover in a ditch next to the dike, while he goes over the dike to see what is farther down the dike. After seeing that there are some Germans at the machine gun that has been firing down the road, he comes back over and tells the men to come over the dike. They go over to the other side, where Winters wants them to deploy mortars from, after he and the other men shoot down the men at the machine gun. He also has 2 men man their machine gun near the top of the dike, next to the road, but out of the site of the Germans. He took the rest of the men down the road, nearer to the German machine gun. Winters tells each man a certain German to shoot. On his order they all would shoot the German they were assigned, and then go back down to the ditch where the mortars would be deployed from. When they shot the Germans, the 2 machine gunners would start firing on the German positions, and mortars would be deployed. Both sides echanged machine gun fire, and Winters and his men were stuck in the ditch over night. Winters knew that once the Germans figured out that they were in a ditch, they would outflank them and the patrol would have gone horribly wrong. He tells the men to follow him on the signal, which was a red smoke grenade thathe threw into the field. After throwing the smoke grenade, he started running across the field to the German position at the dike. As soon as the smoke grenade went off, the men started across the field. Winters soon came over the dike, and saw a little way across the field, a very young German soldier. Winters shot him down. He later said that that is what his bad dreams are - shooting that very young german soldier, who he figured was about 18. Soon the rest of the men came over the dike, firing into the Germans. They had gunned down about a compnay of men, and figured that was it, but a whole nother company came over the dike. Winters' men were outnumbered by the Germans, who had 2 companies of men and Winters had about a platoon of men, but easy destroyed them.

Near the end of the episode, easy had another operation they needed to execute. There were about 140 British soldiers trapped and hiding on the other side of the Rhine river. They had secured 6 rubber boats to take them acroos and get the British across to safety. They did so perfectly, and without casualties.

Replacemnets (( episode 4 Band of Brohters ))

Replacements begins with the men at Mourmelon-Le- Grand, a camp in France where the men can rest. While there, replacments are sent in, hence the name replacements. Soon the men learn that they will be dropping deep into German occupied Holland. The operation they would be a part of was Operaton Market Garden, which was the biggest operation for the airborne.

When they drop, everything goes well and they quickly group together, to get ready to move into a small town called Eindhoven. It turns out that the people of Eindhoven wanted to be liberated, an the troops can move in quickly and without a shot fired, while the joyous Dutch citizens are dancing in the streets, celebrating their liberation. Easy company only stays in Eindhoven for the night. During that night, Pvt. David Webster finds a homw with a scared Dutch  family hiding in the air raid shelter ogf their basement. Webster gives the young boy chocolate, which makes him happy because it is the first chocolate he ever had. The next day, Easy moves out of Eindhoven, to try and take the town of Nuenen. As they are approaching thwe town, Webster states that Vincent Van Gogh was born in Nuenen. Its amazing how they are going in to take an occupied town, and artists and where they are born is whats on Webster's mind. The americans and British put up a hard fight, but are not able to take the town. The Brittish tanks are not allowed to do any unnecesary damage of property, so when Martin warns one of the tank drivers, the tank keeps going, and soon German artillery is raining down on the men. They are forced to retreat. Sgnt."Bull" Randleman takes a piece of exploding tank to his shoulder, and gets stuck in the town, spending a night in a barn hiding from the Germans, who are leaving the town. The next day, a jeep comes and gets him out of the town. As they are retreating from their position near the town, Winters says " I dont like retreating" Nixon replies " theres a first time for everythng."

Carentan (( episode3 Band of Brothers ))

Carentan is a small town in Normandy that needs to be taken by the allies so that armor from Utah and Omaha beach can link up and move inland. 2nd Battalion was sent in to get the job done. The road the men took into Carentan was covered in German machine gun fire. The men took cover in the ditches in the side of the road, while Winters stood in the middle of the road, trying to get the men moving. Some of the men had gotten into the town, though not very far, and took cover behid some buildings, fireing at the machines gunners who had the rest of the men stuck. Winters sent some of the men to go around and get in the town through a different way 2 buildings over from where the machine gunners were. Shifty shot down a sniper, and a machine gunner. Soon the men were in the town, and gaining control of it.

Carentan-- Lipton takes shell fragments to his face, hand, and inner right thigh

They had a machine gun set up firing into the field of retreating Germans, and men were throwing hand-grenades into buildings and making sure they were clear, when the Germans began shelling the town. Lipton was yelling to the men saying "they got us zeroed! Get out of the street!", when a shell went off and he took a piece to his face, hand, and inner right thigh. Soon they had the town cleared. Winters was going down a street, when a bullet ricoched((dont kno how to spell that)) oof the street and hit him in the leg. When he was in the aid station geting it cleaned and bandaged by Doc Roe, he saw Pvt. Blithe sitting in a corner. He went and limped over to see what was wrong. Pvt. Blithe could not see, but after being talked to and comforted byWinters, he was relieved and stayed in the aid station only a few more hours before returning to the men again. Doc Roe called it hysterical blindness.

The Germans who had occupied the town regrouped south of town. Easy was sent out to defend the line, and prevent a counter-attack. They were positioned behind a hedgerow, with Germans behind another Hedgerow about 500 meters away. the men dug in.

Sometime in the night, Sgnt. Talbert went to a Pvt. Smiths foxhole, wearing a German rain poncho, to tell him it was his time to check the line. Smith lunged at Talbert and stabbed him twice, thinking he was German. Talbert rcovered and came back to jump into Holland.

That night, Winters is telling Lieutanant Welsh that they will begin at 0600 hours(( 6:00 )) the next morning with mortar and machine gun fire, if the Germans didnt attack before then. Right as the men  were about to attack, the Germans began shelling them, and soon there were tanks firing onto easy's left flank (( dog and fox company )), who soon pulled back. Easy was left to defend the line basically by themselves. The 2nd armored regiment comes to easy's rescue and soon the Germans pull back. Pvt. Blithe is ordered to lead a patrol to a farmhouse, which is exspected to have Germans in it. He gets shot in the neck. At the end of the episode, it tells you he died a few years later. I was on Amazon.com, and under its facts about Band of Brothers, it said that Blithes family reported that he was in fact shot in the shoulder, recovered, fought in Korea, and was buried in Arlington National cemetary with full military honors.

Day of Days (( episode 2 Band of Brothers ))

Day of Days begins the same way Currahee ends, with C47's filled with airborne paratroopers, flying over the English Channel to drop behind enemy lines in Normandy, France. Most of the men miss the DZ (( drop zone )) i a small French town called Ste. Mere Eglise. Easy also looses their C.O., Lieutanant Meehan, because his plane is shot down.

When Lieutanant Winters lands, he quickly prpares to fight, and very soon meets up with Hall, an able company man who Winters coached on the 506th basketball team. The 2 men head off to find the DZ, and the rest of easy company. They soon meet up with Seargent Lipton along with a few other men. Still heading towards the DZ, they find Toye, Guarnere, Malarkey and their men. Winters puts Hall and Guarnere in the front of their formation, and as they are coming towards a railway bridge, Hall halts, along with the rest of the men, because he hears a bunch of Germans coming up the road. Winters gives the orders and positions the men to ambush the Germans, and tells them to wait for his command to fire. Guarnere, who, just before they jumped, learned that his brother diead at Monte Cassino, Italy. He begins firing on the Germans before he is order to do so, to get revenge on his brothers death. The men wipe out those Germans, and continue on their way to Ste. Mere Eglise. When they get to the DZ andthe rest of the company, Winters learns that Meehan still hasnt shown up, and soon later that he is dead, and he is the new C.O.

Winters is ordered to take easy and take out 4 German 88s that are firing onto the boys landing on Utah beach. He has them drop all their equipment, except ammo, grenades , and their weapons. He told them the attack would be a quick frontal attack which was supported by a base of fire from different positions, which were as close to the guns as possible. Winters was able to attack the Germans from several different positions, because the field was irregular in shape. The 2 machine guns which provided the base of fire were manned by Prvts. Plesha and Hendrix on one gun and Liebgott and Petty on the other. Winters told Lieutanent Compton to take Guarnere and Malarkey to get up as close to the first gun in the battery as possible, and throw grenades into the trench. Winters also sent Lipton and Ranney to put flanking fire into the enemy position. Winters led the charge staight down the hedge with Pvts. Lorraine (( sink's jeep driver )) and Popeye Wynn, and Corporal Joe Toye. Lipton said about the attack " We fought as a team without standout stars. We were like a machine. We didnt have anyone who leaped up and charged a machine gun. We knocked it out or made it withdraw by maneuver and teamwork or mortar fire. We were smart ; there werent any flashy heroics. We had learned that heroics was the way to get killed without getting the job done, and getting the job done was more important." Hall was the only death that E-company had during the attack. He was Winters' first dead man.

WInters received the Distiguished servive cross for what he did at Brecourt Manor. Compton, Guarnere, Lorraine, and Toye got the Silver Star, and Lipton, Malarkey, Ranney, Liebgott, Hendrix,  Plesha, Petty, and Wynn got Bronze stars.

Currahee (( episode 1 Band of Brothers ))

Currahee, the first episode in the miniseries Band of Brothers, gives you an inside view of the training the men of easy company went through at camp Taccoa, Georgia, all the way to England where they prepare for their jump and finish their training. Currahee is the name of the mountain that the men have to run up in training. 3 miles up. 3 miles down. men who stopped and couldnt run anymore were sent away tobe in the regular infantry.

their first C.O. , Captain Sobel, only has big parts in the film during this episode. In the book,  Stephen E. Ambrose calls him a Chickensh*t

Chickensh*t refers to behavior that makes military life worse than it need be:petty harassment of the weak by the strong; open scrimmage for power and authority and prestige; sadism thinly diguised as necessary discipline; a constant 'paying off of old scores' ; and insistance on the letter rather than the spirit of ordinances. Chickensh*t is so called - instead of horse- or bull- or elephant sh*t it is small -minded and ignoble and takes the trivial seriously."

One day during training at Taccoa, Sobel decides that the men need a break and tells them they wont be running that day. He then has the fed a huge speghetti lunch. This may seem nice as your watching but soon Sobel gives then a nice surprise. After they ate half their meal and are stuffed with pasta, he comes in and tells them they will be running. As they are running Currahee, 3 miles up  3 miles down, men are throwing up all over. Sobel is telling them that there is an ambulence waiting to take them away if they want. They could be done with the airborne, the training Currahee, and him. All they had to do wasget in the ambulence. In the movie you will see him saying this to Seargent Randleman. Randleman doesnt get in the ambulance and later Richard Winters, who is soon to be the easy company C.O., says that Randleman was one of his finest soldiers.

Some of the training took place in Uppotery, England, because of its likeness to France in that the landscape is similar.

The incident where Sobel makes a fool of himself by cutting the fence to a farmers cow pasture, took place in Uppottery. Sobel is leading the men on a tactical training mission. Since he doesnt know how to read a map correctly, he gets the company lost, and they come to a barbed wire fence that" wasn't supposed to be there." He sends the men to take cover behind a group of trees, while he attempt to figure out what to do. While the men are behind the trees, George Luz, an E-company man who can imitate peoples voices, tells sobel to cut the wire fence and go through, while pretendin to be Major Horton, who is Sobel's C.O. Sobel does. He comes do the road with the men screaming " Hi Ho silver!" and running the men down the road where winters and 1st platoon are waiting. Sobel and second platoon represents the Germans, and Winters the Allies. Soble gets his men " killed " again. Good thing it was training and not a real combat mission.

The episode ends with the men in C-47's flying across the Englich Channel to drop on France and Winters is looking out the door.
