Clash of th3 Titans

While I respectfully recognize everybody as their own take on the press events, I figured, I would weigh in with mine.

In short, my opinion is:

Nintendo>>>>Microsoft>>>>Sony

I think Nintendo is continuing to bring some great, out-of-the-box thinking. Granted, the steering wheel was amusing, and the zapper was no surprise, I think the Wii Fit demo may not have fit with the topography of E3. Nintendo did an excellent job showing how it applied to gaming, though the masses might not find it appealing. The Wii, as their press clips showed, appeals to a significantly larger group than just the core gaming audience. With Wii consoles installed in fitness clubs and vacation clubs, Wii Fit is a perfect complementor to the console. The console is innovative and appealing. Wii Fit, when calibrated correctly, would definitely add to that appeal in their partnered installations. At home, Wii Fit strengthens Wii's claim to the living room. For those who think this is a peripheral only a mother could love, you are half correct.

As a married man, I look at this and think it is a peripheral a wife would permit. My wife is very busy. She would like to exercise more. She would like to be more active. With a little one in the home, major personal projects, and a job to do, she is swamped. However, I am inclined to believe she just might take the time to do some step aerobics, balance excercises, or active play time with Wii Fit. Is she sold on it? No. She is wary of and resentful of games in general (unless they are board games). I think she got that from her father, but I can respect that. Nintendo gives me reasons to buy that are easier to justify to my wife than any other manufacturer . . . especially the decadent images of Sony.

Microsoft trotted out a bunch of games. They were great looking games. However, in many instances, it was only the expected sounds of "Achievement Unlocked" that made me interested. I have become such a junkie that I was looking at the movie tie-in games thinking, "I bet that game would have easy achievements!"

Of course, I thought this as I was simming races in Forza 2. More on that later.

Obligatory Stint of Civil Service

Aside from the case of over-entitlement one potential juror suffers from, it seems most everyone else has been clear on the Juror Parking directions. The government doesn't care if you drove your beat-up Honda Civic, your immaculate Toyota Prius, your uncanny Bumblebee clone, or your hot Europian import. They do care whether you park it in a reserved parking space though. Unless you want to be ticketed, towed, or labeled a terrorist, please be smart, read the signs, and park your car in the proper parking area. The spaces have been conveniently placed (unlike the courthouses to which you are summoned) to help you have a safe, enjoyable, and satisfying visit to the halls of justice.

The last time I was selected for jury duty was a few years ago. I'm not sure if other countries follow the same selection process as Canada and the United States, but if you have a driver's license, register to vote, or claim to be a citizen (predicated upon tax payment), you are eligible to be selected to be part of a panel to pass sentance upon one of your local residents. It's a great opportunity to give back to the government, show you are upstanding member of the community, and otherwise get out of a day at work. When I was entering the courthouse I almost thought I was going somewhere special. I had my pass and my identification out for hired authorities to screen. I passed my baggage through a scanner, and I passed through a metal detector to determine if I was intending to blow-up or shoot-up the place. Since I was determined to be interested in neither, I was permitted to pass inspection.

I did, however, make the mistake of not leaving my parking pass in my vehicle. During a critical break in the legal action I rectified that injustice. My car is now safe from the all-fining pen of the local parking attendants. Now if those parking fines actually went toward caring for the delapidated parking area, I would think justice was indeed meted here.

Have you participated in jury duty? If so, what did you do to pass the time?

Arachne

Do you ever have those moments where you see something but it doesn't register for a moment?

I had one of those as I turned out the lights to attempt to enter my nocturnal sleeping cycle. Then I realized I had seen a spider the size of a quarter on the wall above me. The lights came back on and I reluctantly killed it before it bit me.

I don't like spiders. Maybe it comes from playing so much Spider Fighter on the 2600. Sometimes I wish I had heat vision so I could just burn the spiders from far away.

Just in Time

The news that Microsoft just extended warranties for Xbox360s from one to three years came just in time.

Yesterday marked the one-year anniversary of my console's acquisition. Some of you know I had that original box replaced due to the red ring of death. Personally, I think Microsoft's treatment of this problem is top-notch! Unless the console was bulletproof, I don't think Microsoft could be treating their console customers better.

I have really enjoyed the 360 experience and I look forward to at least two more years of enjoyment.

Wahoooooooo!

Today has been a surprisingly good day. I don't say surprisingly because I necessarily expected it to be a bad day. I was surprised by how easy that last mission was in Lego Star Wars II. Over the last few months I haven't played the Death Star II level. When I did try, I tried and failed. Today I came back, resolved to conquer. I did. After a few minutes through with the TIE Interceptor that achievement unlocked. Getting 100% achievement completion in Lego Star Wars II was a good feeling.

It was like when I porched Paperboy, got Revenge in Burnout, finished the Burger King games, and put Live 06 to rest. I had a lot of single achievements left to get back in March and I have completed many of those tasks. By so doing I have gotten my completion percentage back up to 83.55%. As I finish the last five achievements in Marvel Ultimate Alliance, get the last 3 costumes in DoA4, and get my rank up in NFS:Carbon, I expect that completion rate will only go up. This week I will be playing Homecourt and renting another title. The thing is, I certainly have plenty of employment to labor on and school work to finish. I have found the rewards of presenting in front of my cohorts to be of far greater interest than the thrill of unlocking achievements.

Today I gave two presentations at school. One was on the introduction of the new beetle (by Volkswagen) back in the late 90s, the other was a discussion on the Venture capitalization of Yahoo! back in 1995. Both were interesting discussions, and fascinating cases. They reminded me of the awesomeness of studying big business. While neither case was as riveting as the research I did for my organizational restructuring proposal for EA, I learned some things to help in future marketing and entrepreneurial endeavors. Too bad JR didn't follow our recommendations in the latest publisher realignment last week.

During some down time this last week I also started putting together a proposal for a new marketing/advertising/business-centered program. Imagine my surprise when The Bigs commercial appeared on the site. I guess I am not as far off from center as I initially thought my proposal would be.

Santa MonE3ca

It is early June, normally when I become fixated on work and school again after a sordid E3 bender. . . or as sordid as I allow my life to get.

Last year I took the entire week off of work to watch the unceasing GameSpot Live broadcasting from the Los Angeles Convention Center. I got to virtually meet GameSpot UK, see live stage shows and demos, all while playing some Burnout Revenge. This year will definitely be different. While I won't be taking PTO (Paid Time Off), I have plans. Plans within plans.

The promo site for E3 is up. Tim has already posted another totally tubular video. The only thing left is for the GameSpot staff to herald the arrival of their official E3 passes. As soon as that hits, I must not fear. . . fear is the mind killer.

E3 coverage must flow.

How are Things on the West Coast?

While I missed a certain concert at the Shoreline, I have enjoyed the opportunity to watch the full set for a favorite band I have yet to see live. Watching the videos amid my daily toils certainly beats the heat of weathering the storm of an outdoor concert in the Bay Area. Guitar Hero III better have some Interpol tracks included. Despite talking to my Activision-employed friend the other night, I can only wait, hope, and pray that someday I can play Slow Hands next to tracks by Slow Hand himself. Unfortunately, I haven't taken as much time with Guitar Hero II lately as I would like.

Last night was another round in a long-standing series of international gameplay opportunities. For months I had shelved DoA4 at the behest of my wife. She finds the game revolting to the point of castigating me for even uttering its name. She, like Gollum, told the evil to "go away and never come back!"

I have been responsible for bringing the DoA back. I brought it back because I had a free month of a second XBL account that I did not want to go to waste. Instead of continuing to grind away at the GAS-inducing GRAW, I thought I'd giveaway DoA wins to the people on my friendslist. Last night was the final night of free wins from that account. Peldon, Rawr, Guyzea, and many others enjoyed accumulating victories for their profiles, and some unlocked some rather lucrative achievements in a short time period. Others decided not to partake, but that was their choice. I sent out numerous invitations, and wish everyone the best in their achievement hunt.

Those who turned out this past week were from many different countries and continents. Canada, Australia, Brasil, and Texas all had residents receiving free wins at the expense of the AuctionedFawn. Said deer will now be put down for permanent retirement. The 0 gamerscore in itself is a testament to selflessness of the beast.

Finally, NBA Live 06 arrived in my mailbox. I was no longer anticipating its arrival. I had ordered a significantly discounted copy from an Internet-based reseller only to wait in limbo for over 6 weeks. In a surprising turn of irony, the day said reseller credited my account for the undelivered game was the day the game arrived. Now I get to go back and have some fun with debits before I start dunking. The seller was based in the East and blames the slow-going USPS for the delinquent date of arrival, but I guess living in the Golden State is not without its drawbacks.

The arrival of Live 06 and the pending rental of another game this month means I won't be looking for a GameFly account anytime soon. Thank you to everybody who responded about the membership opportunities. Unfortunately, I will have to delay that expense for at least another month. A buddy of mine will be lending me his copy of Homecourt. Once I get that, anybody still looking for online wins should let me know. I will be happy to provide consecutive victories as long as somebody provides ten consecutive online wins for my achievement.

I have probably posted long enough. Time to truncate this diatribe.

I Get [Game]Fly with a Little Help From My Friends

Has anybody watching this blog noticed GameFly is offering a Wii for pyramid marketing behavior from new subscribers?

I have been kicking around the idea of a short-term subscription, but haven't joined yet. My free rentals from a different rental service will be ending this month and I really want to finish some games I don't actually own. It seems short-term rental is the only way to do that. Despite wanting a Wii, I don't want to be marketing to my friends. However, to my friends, feel free to let me know if you need somebody to be one of your 5 people.

If you use GameFly, do you like it?

If you subscribe to GameFly and need a new subscriber to get your recruiting quota PM me.

I haven't decided if I am going to subscribe, but the offerings seem to be . . . enticing.

Of the retail games I need to finish, a few have only one achievement left:

* Lego Star Wars II

* Alaskan Adventures (Complete with invulnerable squirrels)

* Meet the Robinsons (I just need to finish the puzzles)

And then there are the games I want to burn through just for the easy points:

* NBA Live 06

* Open Season

* Tony Hawk's American Wasteland

* Bionicle Heroes (Sorry Tom, but they seem like easy points)

* College hoops 2K6

* Fusion Frenzy 2

* NHL 2K6

* Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

* Samurai Warriors 2

* Samurai Warriors 2 Empires

* Surf's Up

. . . Maybe some others.

I think with some judicious planning and smart allocation of resources, I could definitely catch somebody less than 11,000 points away. After all their next closest competitor seems to be another four grand behind me.

Wait. I thought I was done with all the points race shenanigans. Maybe not.

501 Blues + Static-Free Channel Z

Just a quick update for those keeping track:

1. Finals are today and tomorrow. Forecasting production runs is *so* much fun! Final negotiation presentation is regarding NASCAR

2. A package arrived today. No, it wasn't the $9 copy of NBA Live 06 I ordered a month ago, it is a new headset I ordered on Monday!

3. People looking to play static-free XBL game sessions should be on the lookout for me tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon.

4. Marvel Ultimate Alliance is a hoot. Anybody into Marvel comics should pick it up (I'm looking at you edu!) . . . Particularly if you can find it for $15-20.

5. Crossovers occur in webcomics too. Unless you read all of the strips involved, none of them may make sense.

6. Thunderhorse is still my favorite song in Guitar Hero II. Who would have thought?

7. When Lost Planet's Battleground map is released to those of us regular-version owners, I will be playing it. . . regardless of how out-of-practice I am.

8. Day on the Meadow is returning and 104.9 will be bringing They Might Be Giants and Fountains of Wayne to play on July 3rd. Looks like I will be taking some time off.

9. San Diego Comic Convention is less than 7 weeks away. Anybody looking for a Big Lebowski Bobble Head better give me $20 soon. Since SDCC is now two weeks after E3, hopefully many of the E3 demos will be on display at Comic-Con.

Blog 500: The Unthinkable

Over the last year, my involvement with GameSpot has exponentially increased. When I first came to the site in 2000, I never would have thought I would be where I am today.

Recently, the Uncanny Vinny Caravella (UVC) created a trailer for a feature I appeared in.

[video=cHIzkWH75b4KuTfZ]

The same week Button Mashing aired, people who tuned in to watch the Brain Bust tournament got to see me again. In both instances, I had a good run, but failed to win . . . and by win, I mean win outright. It kind of reminds me of that time I was awarded Ultimate VIP status when the popular vote was in favor of somebody else. It is at this point many people will stop reading because they misconstrue my comments as the self-aggrandizing ramblings of a braggart. What the following retrospective has taught me is the importance of showing up.

I've been frequenting GameSpot since 2000, but in 2003 I signed up for the forums. I was probably no more than a blip on the radar at that point. In 2005, I was in the final round of interviews with Logitech and I wanted a career in gaming. After winning tickets to G.A.M.E. (GameSpot's Games and Music Experience), I knew I had the opportunity to meet and mingle with the GameSpot staff, publisher representatives, and any interested individuals who may be in attendance. So, after finals on Saturday, my father, friend, and I drove out to San Francisco for the event. While there, I had the opportunity to talk with Rich Gallup, Ryan MacDonald, Greg Mueller, Bob Colayco, and many others. I was handily destroyed in the then-unreleased DoA4 by the indomitable Jeff Gerstmann . . . I can only hope the footage of that experience is not available anywhere.

As I was waiting for my turn to face Jeff, I struck up a conversation with Bethany. I was curious how moderators were selected for the forums. At the time I was a moderator, administrator, and Dungeon Master for a Neverwinter Nights server and discussion board. She recommended I make lots of friends on the forums, post a lot, and send her a PM if I was serious about assuming the role. Then she would consider it. While that counsel was given in 2005, it may yet still be the poilcy.

From the contacts, discussions, and time spent on what seemed to be the slowest night of the convention, I committed to being more active in the forums. After all, the event yielded a bag full of other booty. Despite slowing activity in the GameSpot Live Union, I tried posting there regularly. I tried hard to create new and interesting topics to discuss, provide feedback on how great the shows were, and use my past as an advertising copywriter to hype upcoming shows and activities. After Rich announced the Union was coming back (promise!) I had a PM exchange in which he offered me the only non-staff officer position in the Union. I was tasked with ensuring the Union came back.

Me?

I was so excited by that appointment I called my wife and told her the news. Rich announced the appointment and the official return of the Union during The HotSpot, On the Spot, and in the forums. Thanks really goes out to Jody Robinson who made the recommendation. She had been posting, contributing, and watching over the Union, but saw a great opportunity to bring in some additional activity. If it wasn't for that recommendation, I would probably still be an overactive forumite with a penchant for pop-culture references.

I've been to the offices, interviewed for jobs, and participated in various events, but in the end my GameSpot experiences have taught me one thing: If you want to be there, you need to show up because you never know when the right opportunity will become available.

Many are called, but few are chosen.
