Hi guys, I just want to see the opinions here, because I'm unsure how this is even an argument. Having used a 360 for a while now, going back to the PS3 controller is... kinda hard.
There are a number of rather obvious problems with the PS3 pad compared to... well, the 360 and gamecube, being the only traditional competitors. Lets start by noting your right hand. On any controller, your right thumb will naturally rest on the face buttons, which have been placed there because it's the msot natural spot for your thumb to rest. The right stick is secondary. In the same way, your left thumb rests on the d-pad... which sadly is not the primary feature your left thumb will be dealing with. Sony realised this with the original PS1 controller, when they position the d-pad in that primary position, and then with the first Dual shock added a thumbstick in the secondary when they assumed the d-pad would continue to be the primary input. Sadly, this was never recitifed.
Keeping on the control sticks, they're convex. It isn't usually a problem, but the concave shape of the 360's sticks just gives you that bit extra grip when it's needed.
Moving on, the shoulder buttons, the digital ones are fine, but L2 and R2 are just... bad. First issue is some rather abdly done analogue control. Unlike the gamecube and 360 triggers, which slide smoothly with consistant resistance, the PS3 seems to have used a cheaper mechanism which appears to be some squishy resistive material? Similar to what they use to make thier analogue face buttons. Issue here is that the range of motion is far less then either the 360 or gamecube, and is inconsistant. Just a bad feel.
THis is compounded by the fact that for whatever reason they tilted the shoulder buttons backward. The gamecube had concave shoulder buttons, allowing your finger to rest inside them, no slipping at all there. The 360 has them curve upward to avoid the issue, which is fine as well. The PS3 actually tilts downwards making the issue even worse then if they'd done nothing. The fact a third party market has sprung up around selling little mods to fix this is telling.
Lastly the shape... It was good back in the 90's when we'd just come from the Snes. Hell, it is a snes pad, they've added two handles, but the body is modelled around a snes pad. Now go take a look at the 360/gamecube pads. Even the Wii's classic controller pad which is much closer to a PS3 control. The first two have shaped the entire body to rest comfortably in your hand, the last has shaped the handles. The PS3 on the other hand uses a standard snes style body with two small symetrical handles.
It's a little strange, after 3 generations of using playstation pads, the simple fact they never changed thier design has lead many people, myself included, to get rather used to it. However, after switching for a while and then trying to go back, it's night and day. Sony tried to fix these ergonomic issues with thier batarang controller, but obviously they went in a slightly odd direction. I'm hoping they try again for the PS4, as I would really like a controller as comfortable as what I've gotten used to on other systems now.
