It's amazing what some people can do and the sacrifices they can make, unfortunately stuff like this will never get into the media. Also unfortunately, people are unable to avoid making this a political thread.

For a true workable democracy you'd need a well informed voting public... so no.
Not necessarily. The whole point of a representative democracy is that the public is not well-informed, and so representatives who specialize in politics are given power to make decisions based on those they represent.
