Yup I use a Sony Wega Kv-30HS420 1080i HDTV. I picked it up on craigslist for $250 an it provides a great picture, with excellent color representation, contrast ratio, and refresh rate at a fraction of what an equivalent LCD or plasma would cost.
315 US Dollars with shipping from ebay. 20GB Model with full backwards compatibility, 4 usb ports, SACD support, and of course blu ray playback. If wifi is not a concern then you can get the 20GB cheap and use some of the savings to upgrade the HD.
20GB system with a 60GB harddrive. Bought in February off e-bay for $300. Nice price for a next gen, blu ray playing, linux running, backwards compatible game system.
Another friend has the 80gb model and had the disk drive fail on him 3 months after purchase. He purchased the extended service plan from the retailer but they would only replace it will available models (currently 40gb). Thus his options were wait for the re-relase of the 80gb in june or send it back to sony for repairs. He chose the later. the turn around for the factory repair is about 2 weeks. his system was still fortunately under factory warranty however since he purchased it this past x-mas.
if they let you keep the harddrive you will lose all the information on it if you try to install it on your new model. This is because when you install a new HD it requires a mandatory format. I upgraded my 20GB harddrive with a 60GB harddrive that was taking out of a friends system. He had music and games on it all of which was lost when upon installation the sony software gave you the option to quit installation or format the drive. If you want to preserve your data on your current model hook up a usb flash drive or hardrive and chose the back up option in the xmb.
I would wait a few more weeks for the Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle. for $500 you'll get the 80GB model with Metal Gear Solid 4 as well as the superior Dualshock 3 controller. see here for more information
I also have the 20GB. Both the 20GB and 60GB systems have the full ps2 hardware on board and rely on the hardware to playback ps2 games. The 80GB system lacks the Emotion engine but has the graphics synthesizer and thus use's software emulation to make up for the missing hardware. So if you have the hardware, then yes, your system will still resort to it as it has a much higher compatibility with ps2 games then the software option.
