Someone tell me something nice about GORDON FREEMAN, the "Greatest Video Game Character of All Time"

muzik_mafia

He's the epitome of a character that a developer would want in order to immerse yourself to the fullest.

So barebone characters are "immersive"?

So then how come Nathan Hale or Marcus Fenix are such poor characters, but Gordon Freeman is a great design?

The people around Gordon are the ones who shape him to be such a great character. It just feels that in Half-Life 2 people actually give a rats ass who is Gordon Freeman.

On the other hand I'm playing resistance right this instant and people in that game don't seem to care who nathan hale is. Pretty much: Ya hale go destroy stuff for us we don't really care who you are as long as you kick ass.

- Any series that has had their story finished.

- Any series that has prequels.

- Any series that has 4+ games of it (unless of course the story isn't finished yet such as with Half-Life)

Top 3 for me would be:

- World of Warcraft

- Counter Strike 1.6 + Source

- Tetris

I must've wasted atleast a year and a half of playtime of my life on those 3 games.

[QUOTE="Solid_Tango"]I feel the exact same way, i bought the orange box on the 360 played it as much as i could but it was soooooo verrrryyy boring, seriously guys i dont get the prise for this game at all. Then i bought it for the pc, altho it looks nicer and the controls are way smoother the story the gameplay still soo boring :( and freeman is hands down the worst character evervashkey

There is your problem. You played it first several years after it came out. Everybody who bashes it seems to have played it after 2007... a whole 3 years after it was originally launched.

The first time I saw that game in 2002 or 2003, shivers went up my spine on how real it looked.

I didn't play Final Fantasy VII until 2004 and I still really enjoyed it. A good game is a good game, a few years isn't going to change that. Just accept that there are aspects of Half-Life 2 not everyone's going to like. It's not the perfect game and it's not for everyone. Just because people are a few years late doesn't mean they can't have an opinion. The only changes in standards for games between now and 2004 is graphics. Thats it. Recharging health too, but that was already around during 2004, so....

It is the perfect FPS for me. And even after a few years I can still replay it and it still awes me.

Half-Life 2 is definitely my favorite FPS of all time (probably my favorite game). Beat it 3 times since it came out and I'll probably beat it another.

What makes this such a great game for me first of all is not the story itself, but how it is presented and the transition between chapters. I've played a lot of other FPS and it really feels as if you're teleported between levels (oh hey look I was in England and now I'm in China in a split second. How in bloody hell did I get here). Half-Life 2 definetly has the smoothest transition I've seen in a game.

Also while the story is pretty basic for a sci-fi shooter (oh hey aliens took over the earth), Half-Life 2 without a doubt in my mind presents the best atmosphere in a game I've ever seen. It sucks you in the game. Gordon Freeman not talking also contributes to this to make you feel more as if you were a part of it and I feel they nailed it.

I've cared more about the characters in Half-Life 2 than I have for any other FPS game (obviously RPGs are another story since they basically revolve around the characters and their stories). I cared about Alyx. I cared about Eli, about Kleiner, Barney and G-man. They were interesting unlike most characters I've seen in other FPS.

If you're looking for a fast paced action FPS then your'e right, this might not exactly be for you. But if you want an atmosphere unrivaled in any other FPS, graphics that still hold their own even to this date, a butterly smooth transition of the story and characters that you can actually give a flying f about, then Half-Life 2 is probably for you.

The cave in Gears 2 is equally jaw dropping.

Cicatraz_ESP

Not even close to looking that good. Alot of areas in Gears of War looked good, but not one come close to how freaking insane that spaceship looks.

Post a pic if you could.

Here's a video of it:

[QUOTE="Eggimannd"]

[QUOTE="OPuniverse"]these kind of threads are starting to get really annoying. I'll replace gametrailer and gave U2 an 11/10 so all of u guys can be happy about it. Seriously AAAE game, what can you ask for more?Kickinurass

There's already a 14 page long thread about this explaining why people are pissed that uncharted 2 got 9.3 on gametrailers. It has nothing to do with the score itself (9.3 is a great score), it has to do that they explained the docking of points by saying it was "unoriginal" yet they gave games like Halo 3 a 9.8 (and Halo 3 was definitely not original).

I don't see the confusion.

A reviewer plays the game - game leaves impression on reviewer. Reviewer gives game a numerical score and justifies it with a well thought out review.

The Uncharted 2 review had a great score and the reviewer even suggested every PS3 owner buy the game. He obviously played the game and liked it, but maybe the game reminded him of GeoW or something. Doesn't really matter - it was a minor setback. At most the reviewer knocked off .2 points from the game, hardly anything to scream about.

Halo 3 came out 2 years ago and included some great features. The reviewer was impressed - and personally I don't know too many high quality games like Halo. CoD? Nothing like it. PDZ - nah. I think Halo has a unique identity for a shooter - maybe it's not original but does it have to be? Maybe the reviewer simply had fun with the game. Maybe that reviewer knocked off .2 points too.

Get it over it, it's called an opinion. Maybe the reviewers though Halo 3 and Gears were a better experiences to begin with- Gear's could have have scored a 9.7 and Halo 3 a 10 for all we know until the got docked a few points. But does it really matter considering all game still received stellar ratings? This 9.3 mess is the definition of making a mountain out of a molehill.

Or maybe I should listen to the fanboys and simply agree that every sequel to release this gen needs to have up to .5 points taken away because GT gave Uncharted 9.3.

But that's the thing. I'll bet you anything Gears 2 and Halo 3 were scored without having that idea of docking points for originality. It really just seems that gametrailers were annoyed with all these people complaining about the 9.3 score and came up with a retarded excuse for it (hence the originality thing).

I have no problems with the score. It's just gametrailers screwed themselves up even more by coming up with this originality thing. If they want to use that as an explanation they have to be consistent with it which they are not.
