I've just upgraded my harddrive to a 320 gig and before I changed my harddrives, I copied all my save files onto the PSP memory stick, went online, downloaded the update from Sony and installed the harddrive, connected the PSP to the PS3 and away I went, I logged back onto my PSN account and had all my trophies (If you care about them) and most importantly, my saved games still work, namely LBP :D

I'm delighted with it, it's a wonderful DVD player as well, the remote is fantastic, easy to use and Bluray looks amazing on the right TV.

Oh believe me I know. Take it from someone who downloads a lot of big files (Mainly uncompressed video from my film making friends, we're talking a gig by MSN or Yahoo lol) and you get right up to the end..... and you lose connection, it drives one insane

(It might interest you all to know, that when I snapped the harddrive out of the cage..... the screw came lose, how's that for ironic?

Following some advice of my fellow gamespot users, I decided to give my harddrive a little "rough loving" using a pair of pliers that I bought, I bent the screw over and snapped it free of the cage, then using a hammer.... I basically banged it back into shape. , I stuck the new harddrive in, fastened the three screws and inserted it back inside the PS3 and am now in the course of reinstalling everything onto my new harddrive, so far.... no problems :D

I don't doubt that they work, it's just my tools don't work, the grips on them are too big.

Find yourself a pair of needlenose pliers and try to turn the screw that way. I've heard of other people doing that and it's worked for them.

I don't believe the cage is standard as it locks into place in the PS3 but I could be wrong. I'm also not sure Sony would send you an empty cage. So I'd say needlenose pliers and then maybe computer store.

Vice grips work great too.  You don't need all 4 screws to hold your HDD in.

Tried it, doesn't work.... the tools are too big, I'll have to take it into a computer store, it's finding the time to do so now, so close.....and that sodding screw, I'm not fussed with the screw, I know I don't need all four to hold it in, it's just the one stopping me from upgrading lol

Oh, that sucks. BTW, can the PS3 use a 320GB HDD? Someone told me 300GB was the limit of what it could write to. I dont know if thats true or not.Darthmatt

Oh hell no, don't tell me that! lol, as far as I know it should work, there was a review on Amazon by a customer who said he had no problems with 320 gigs and several people here (and they had a lot of posting) told me it would work, I'm confident it will work...... just annoyed that I can't get it out of the cage.

A few days ago,  read  afew forum posts about having my harddrive upgraded, I figured, what the hell? So I went to Amazon and bought myself a 320 gig harddrive to replace my 40 gig one....

It arrived by post today, and using the correct screwdriver (It definetely was the correct one, as it loosened the other 4 screws) I pulled the harddrive out of the PS3 with no difficulty, took out the 3 screwsof the casing without any problem... then I was looking forward to unscrewing the last and final screw..... and it would NOT BUDGE, I have tried and tried, I even asked my partner to try it and she couldn't do it, I even went next door and asked my male neighbor to try and loosen it, and he couldn't do it either and now I have destroyed the screw and I cannot get the harddrive out of it's cage...

So I'm left with two options, should I call Sony and have them send me out a new empty cage? or are these cages standard and can I buy one at a computer store? My second option, which I will do, is probably take the harddrive into a computer store to see if they have some tool to take the screw out.

What annoys me, the fact that the first four screws came out with no problems or resistance whatsoever...it's infuriating/ Anyhow, I plugged my original harddrive into my PS3 and screwed it all back up for now.... seeing as I'm under my one year warranty and have an extended warranty with the store, would they charge me for the cage?
