Exhaust from cars still contains gasoline in vapour form. It is still flamable and small amounds of fuel occasionally leak into the exhaust. A single spark could ignite the fuel and cause a chain reaction all the way to the fuel tank.
This all could happen if you have leaks or problems with your car's exhaust system that's why you don't fool around with fire near vehicles.

Don't get too excited. Flame throwers exert outward pressure or air to get the flame "throwing". This means that the flame cannot go back into the exhaust system. AND, the system is not directly set up in the exhaust system in the first place. I guess you're really the one who got "owned".
